I think aiming for TV broadcast was the reason this was delayed for so long. This was submitted & denied TV license multiple times and finally they gave up TV and was approved for web license. It is a shame but China's censorship has gotten stricter and considering the subject matter, I don't see this airing on TV anymore... unless it becomes a MASSIVE hit, then it maybe might get a CCTV run.

The best I can hope for is after many rounds of edits during submission to the censorship board, they didn't butcher the story too much from its original form.

He wants to be a serious actor and tbh, most romance dramas are poorly written. It's not so much that he won't do romance dramas, its more like he's a lot pickier about the dramas he chooses.

But honestly, which of his dramas that have aired are pure romance? I guess "Love Actually"? They are all different genres with love lines. No, I don't think he will pass up on a good script just b/c there is romance in it lol. I think it's that he will stay away from the mindless idol romance dramas that have saturated C dramaland is all.

This is set in 1926, right before the KMT and CCP split. At this point both KMT & CCP were allied together. The ML joined the KMT. The party they called revolutionaries were the KMT party name and not CCP. This is set right before Chinese Civil War (KMT vs. CCP).

Like China would make dramas where they labeled the revolutionaries aka the "bad guys" as CCP. They were the Kuomintang (KMT).

The side couples are sooooo boring. And the way they each endlessly stalk and hound after their love interests is so off-putting. Don't do this in real life kids, that's how you get retraining orders slapped on you.

I know they're dating in real life but the chemistry between ML & FL is so tepid... Compared to the chemistry ML had with his FL in Goodbye My Princess, this is so meh. I think its b/c FL is too... cold, wooden, remote? I don't know how to describe it but I just find it hard to connect with her even with her sad backstory. But I do like that the FL here is very smart and capable. I just wish their chemistry was a bit more tangible.

This casting is complete BS. Neither one of them is attached to this project.

I wish I can watch him again with Song Yi. They were so cute on Luoyang… but totally wasted by poor writing.

Unlikely there’ll be a season 2.

Kinda anticlimactic. There was too much exposition so it kind of went out with a whimper instead. Everyone saw WYJ as villain coming. One thing I do like was the storyline with the Unwelcome Well getting addressed. Never sat well with me how GBZ was so willing to serve the same system that is suppressing his people. He made promises to his people with no way of keeping them. There was no discussion of if he serve diligently, they’ll let his people free. It worked out at the end but when he made those promises, he had no realistic way of keeping those promises. It’d make more sense for him to work against the system. But I’m sure censorship comes into play, they can’t have a hero that is seditious to the established government.

It had its flaws but it’s miles better than the majority of crap dramas this year. It definitely deserves higher than an 8.1 at least.

When you guys were speculating about GBZ’s death, I was staring at that crying emoji between WSY and WYJ in the relationship map. I knew she was likely to be the one killed off if it was a SE.
