If they just exiled them, she would've taken in other aides to replace them. The idea that she would've been getting from this is that every time she does something wrong, her current aides would be exiled as her punishment but she can still take more. And the cycle would continue.

Killing her current ones would be the ultimate punishment to make her learn NOT to do anything bad.

Personally, I think that's the best punishment for the fifth princess. killing her would mean nothing and it's even worse because it would affect the empress negatively. Punishing her lightly might only make her want to take revenge on either Shaoshang or Ling Buyi because they're the only ones below her in the palace.

Since they don't want her killed, they have to figure out a way to have her feel utmost remorse and regret and fear of doing any more bad things. She had the most affection towards her aides so losing them would hurt her most.

I feel bad for the 10+ men though. I can't believe dying as the fifth princess' punishment would be their ultimate purpose in the story.

they're her aides which usually would mean assistants or advisors but from what I gather in the show, she treats them like her 2nd husbands / concubines, which she also funds that's why marqis yue was so mad she's supposed to marry his son

I think it was mentioned several times in the drama but the emperor founded their country only a little more than a decade, so the foundation is still frail, and that's why the royal family (at least the emperor and his two wives) have a strong feeling of gratitude toward everyone who helped and sacrificed with them to finally have peace in the land; because they experienced all the chaos themselves first-hand. Ling Buyi wasn't just their adopted son, he was also the last descendant of their benefactor, the Huo clan, which was wiped out in pursuit of the emperor's greater cause.

To enumerate, the Empress' Xuan clan offered their wealth so the emperor can have more power (through marriage), Consort Yue resorted to being content as a 2nd wife even though she and the emperor were the ones truly in love (so the emperor can have Xuan's wealth), and the Huo clan fought the frontlines, all for the sake of the emperor's "greater cause". The difference is that, unlike the other two clans, the Huo clan only has Ling Buyi now. So other than gratitude, there is also guilt and the feeling of responsibility in order to let the Huo clan grow and prosper again. The only way for that is through Ling Buyi's marriage.

Also, the Empress and Consort Yue very obviously prefer Shaoshang among all the ladies that like Zisheng so I guess that plays a part as well.

Also, my fav Chinese period drama is The Long Ballad and it has everything of those you mentioned lmao.

I don't think period dramas can ever be void of politics and the royal family, especially since written and oral records from those times all revolve around those themes generally
