Nothing against the actors they're amazing but I just couldn't get into this one. 7 months and 10 episodes later…
Don't need to feel bad, find a more suitable drama haha. I think it's so funny that you said '7 months and 10 episodes' but I can relate, I tried to stick past some dramas because they were so insanely hyped and I just couldn't get through.
I know y'all are just talking about whether it's HE or BE in the end, but I just have two things two add this time: -Our main leads both got new clothes! That purple! That green (+his silver bun ring)-Really loving the clothing design
-Did anyone see that Ji Chang, when he started to push tables around in his inability to accept the situation, take the apple because he previously dropped the egg? I thought that was totally hilarious.
Okay, but as I said ^^, I think Ji Chang has more potential-I disagree with giving him more screen time, but with his screen time there could be less egg-holding and eagle-petting than giving him more colour. Why does he do what he does? I think that the way his childhood was described and his attachment to certain things (like the eggs), and his way of doing things actually gives me some notion of why he does things and his psychological condition (I mean as in why he does what he does).
I also have to say that I'm still figuring out the relationship dynamics of the main couple, but even though I also think some things are slightly unhinged the Ji Chang plot has been much, much, much better ended than the whole Di Ji Wedding plot (which was like, um), and I thoroughly enjoyed the two episodes. Based on the ending of 44 we're about to get some explanations, I think.
I must say that this show has given me a lot more insight than maybe 'deep' shows, if you know what I mean, I feel that simply looking at the relationship dynamics brings enough to the table.
I have so many regrets with this drama, but I have loved the journey thoroughly.
I've lost count of how many death games I've seen or read (admittedly, most of those from Japan)... At the surface…
Squid Game isn't revolutionary, don't get me wrong. it's a simple fun watch. I think some of the characters like Park Hae-Soo's (can't remember character name) was pretty layered and interesting, while the others are pitiful but in some form tropes you see here and there. The male lead actually rather feels invisible to me; or at least, I tolerate him yet don't feel so much about him. The cinematography and set designs are interesting and have some meaning, and this 'death game' brings specks of Korean culture, which sets it apart by a bit. It does some work on reflecting on society's relation to this type of event and corruption, but I think it's been covered before, so there is no particular new insight, especially if you've watched a lot of this genre. You can also enjoy the fact the many have watched it and so there's a large viewing audience to interact with. The ending is a bit iffy and not to everyone's taste, but I think this show is good fun all in all.
It's a solid 7 at least. You could give it a try. I have to say that the start of the first episode is a bit slow-paced and centered around the main lead, but it already gets into it well into it within the latter half. It's also only 6 episodes and I don't think it has had many filler scenes.
ive so far only watched 2 eps but like I think the story plot is kinda moving rly slowly nothings rly happening…
Thanks for your insight! That's actually interesting as one of the weibo advertised hot searches for this was about how its pacing is super super quick, haha. I'm compelled to check it out, though.
I dropped this drama a while back, but I do love coming back to this comment section every once in a while, it's pure joy. No hate towards the drama, it's just not my style, but you know, keep on with the comments.
Just saw that it dropped a few hours ago (with a funny delay period in China haha).
This drama has been very much on my radar and I know iQiyi is spending quite the budget on its promotion whether mainland or overseas, so I'm sure they have some confidence in its quality. Haven't seen many works of the leads, but I know Huang Xuan is a good actor.
Does anyone care to write a summary of what you think so far without spoiling? Thanks a bunch.
Not explaining because I'm lazy, but to be honest this show is a tragedy, whether or not there's a happy or sad ending. I'll comment and explanation later maybe. But honestly the romance, personifications, plot-all this is a tragedy in summary. You can't exactly pinpoint ONE genre, it really isn't one. Love this drama but the flaws are obvious, and pitifully. Tbh, whether watching this or any other drama, as long as I comment and interact with the other people following a drama, I'm guaranteed to raise the rating by 0.5, subconsciously or not. A drama-watching experience is really important.
As this drama's ending this week, if anyone wants to go on another drama binge next week onwards (e.g. Luoyang, or the other one with Luo Yunxi whose name I cannot remember, or something else, yeah)
Is anyone of you binging multiple dramas? I can't do that right now haha, 2 40 minutes episodes is a bit of time but that does not include going through the weibo updates from the show and looking at new trailers/scrolling past comments
All Chinese people are so great in historical dramas, they can detect and diagnose any illness, pregnancy, poisoning,…
You're right, it's definitely exaggerated-not to mention the techniques in Wuxia dramas where pressing a certain point on the body (cutting off blood circulation or something, idk) can cause someone to laugh crazy non-stop until the spot is pressed again. But it's true that Chinese acupuncture does have some interesting, generationally-handed-down techniques that do work.
I usually watch with Chinese subs but I switched on the English ones for one episode to check them out after seeing…
Ahah-thanks PeachBlossomGoddess, I love seeing you around. I honestly just saw some of the subtitles from the youtube clips Tencent posted so I may be wrong on the overall.
Subtitling is not the same as translation. There is no need for direct translation, and in fact, direct translations…
Yeah, that's what I mean. I forgot which site it was that does put tips throughout? I don't mean to say that I can't accept it, though I feel regret for those who cannot understand it fully. But obviously, that's how I get messages from other foreign shows as well. I'd say that the details aren't that important, but I wish the subtitles were maybe more...formally phrased? As in, because it's also a historical. It feels a bit off-putting when there are in (the English grammar) so many abbreviations.
Man, the English subtitles are mediocre, at best average for this show. Not that they don't convey the general meaning, but a lot of times it looks like this:
(Not using the actual script, but examples of how it would seem)
e.g: Character: 'I detest you!' 'I hate you!' (Emphasis) Subtitles: 'I hate you!' 'I really do!' (Losing emphasis/strength behind words)
e.g.2: Character: 'Your mind seems to wander lately.' Subtitles: 'You are not as alert as you once were.' (Basically conveying the same thing using the antonym of the projected action)
e.g.3: Character: 'This is not allowed. Rules apply differently to the empress versus a consort.' Subtitles: You can't. (Losing details that help flesh out the perspective)
I completely understand the fact that it's a historical (/faux fantasy because it's seriously just a historical with random elements of fantasy)-so subtitling is so much harder but I do feel bad for those watching who don't get the full meaning. Though I suppose you could argue it doesn't matter as it isn't a political historical, though I think the characters seem a lot more dead, especially when the simplification happens in the pivotal scenes.
I wonder if this is how I intake Korean dramas haha. Maybe their words have more meaning (not even hidden), yet I can't comprehend them.
What if someone says, 'My feeling for you are like.....blossoms...bird...tree' (you know, poem, metaphor), and the subtitles say: I love you?
What's the differences between woman and man when their hair is untied? How can they know right away that she's…
BlackStacy I think think this is what people don't get, because both females and males had long hair back in the ancient times. I think anyone can agree this is a bit far-fetched haha.
Take it as a metaphorical representation, though. The audience understands regardless of the logic that this means that the this means they are recognized as female. As for metaphorical; it's like if the person's robe suddenly fell open, and people realized, oh, that's a female body, but it's completely inappropriate to have that.
This is just a detail, but females' had longer hair than males, and males kept them up at all times (e.g in court, with those huge court official hats). Females actually also kept their hair pinned up in the crazy elaborate hairstyles after marriage, so it's actually a bit of a strange detail with Tilan (probably a customs thing as she's from aa neighbouring kingdom).
^This is general so I don't presume to speak for every dynasty, just kind of a general overview.
So take it as a metaphorical, more graceful, poetic representation.
However, that's not the main point of the trope haha.
Overhype means if people hype it more than its value. I think that this show wasn't overhyped because it was hyped up for the global themes and enjoyment. The story itself isn't mind-blowing but worth its score. It's the enjoyment factor. Just rate it as it is. Overhypeness should not be a factor in your rating.
I have a genuine question why is HyeKyo so famous if she can only act monotone? I only got into kdramas at the…
Agree! For once I'd say the comment section for NWBU interesting, I'd say MDL usually is more favorable to mediocre shows, so surprising to say the least, or maybe I haven't been around much. I've always been confused when people say K-drama/C-drama actors have good acting when their acting is acceptable or average at best, so I feel that this comment section is rather refreshing. Acknowledging their shortcomings won't keep me from liking them haha.

Food for thought.
Or is this the average level for subtitling?
haha I knew it was trivial, but I just wanted to nudge it out further back in place
