In the novel the author described him as a guy with an average looking appearance lol. And the funny thing is he is not heroic nor handsome at all, but he is a chic magnet and all the girls, pretty or not, all liked him lol. Only in donghua/drama did HL become handsome lol.

In the novel he was a small thug of Siping Gang HL met at the harbor at Jiayuan City, when HL was going to the Mo's Mansion. He became HL's follower and provided him info on tasks the Mo's family gave HL, and later became the Gang's leader. Because of Sun's loyalty, hundreds years later when HL met his 7th generation descendant, he also helped him out.
In the drama this was simplified, and he was a waiter at Siping restaurant when 1st met HL, and many years later he became the shopkeeper/owner when HL revisited the place.

The best comedies are the ones that make you laugh at first and then sad when thinking deeper...👍

Yes it's very different from the usual Xianxia. Soon the ML will be chased around by many high levels and running for his life a lot lol. That's why he also got a nick name called Han Paopao, which means Han Runrun lol.

I started watching the donghua when it started several years back, and then completed the novel (both volumes). Nowadays the donghua is just icing on the cake and I don't agonize since I already know the story lol. But I gotta say the donghua is really top notch and a real treat to watch especially the later seasons ones, and I still get excited watching them😂

Frankly I like Zi Ling more than NGW too lol. Near the end of volume 2, the author had given strong hint Zi Ling was Ms Mo's reincarnation but never spell it out straight. Mo had asked HL whether a person without spiritual root will never be able to cultivate, because she was a mortal without it and so could never be with HL. Near the end of volume 2 when Zi Ling regained her previous life memory, she told HL that in her pass life she was one without spiritual root, and she died of old age waiting for one man. She was glad that in present life she could still meet HL, and she was glad that she had cultivated hard so that she could be with him (her main motivation on cultivation throughout the novel was because she wanted to be with HL). When NGW teased HL about ZL, HL also told NGW he and ZL had crossed path in her pass life. So the hint is rather obvious, because in the novel the only girl that had crossed path with HL that had no spiritual root and died of old age due to unable to cultivate was Ms Mo😂

From what I heard (not sure how true it is), the author originally intended Zi Ling to be his Tao companion (that's why she is the most beautiful in the novel), but eventually yielded to pressures from majority of the paid readers who wanted NGW lol.

Lol I started off watching the donghua several years back at season 1, and just like you I couldn't stand the slow pace the episodes were released, so I ended up picking up the novel😂
