I am sure they took precautions to not actually hurt the actor. There may be some supports that we cannot see in this scene.
Also, there are stuntmen available on set to handle difficult scenes, so if TJC did the scene himself it was because he knew he could handle it. I think we can trust these actors to know what they are doing.

I think all regions on earth had cruel ways of dealing with adversaries. It’s just that nowadays many history books in the West tend to gloss this over and focus on the political side.
And to be honest, I don’t think humanity has improved much since, the cruelty has just taken on a different shape, like letting people suffer the pain of a tooth abscess or having parents watch their child die for no other crime than being poor and unable to afford treatment.
