While I agree that censorship is hindering certain storylines, I think it is too often used as an excuse for sloppy writing. When they fill a drama with tropes and dumb down the plot it can hardly be blamed on censorship.

Well, repeating the same tropes that worked in another drama is the no. problem with scriptwriting for Chinese dramas. It’s like:”Oh, they love rebirth, let’s give them two dozen more dramas about that.” Or, “that Lantern Festival scene at the night market was so romantic, let’s include it in EVERY costume drama from now on.” I absolutely hate it when they take novels that have close to no such stereotypes/tropes and then try to put in as many as possible in the drama version. It’s as if there is a competition between screenwriters. So, in that sense, it may not be a bad idea to have a newbie, with hopefully fresh ideas, work on this script.

Yes, the writing is very important. If you’ve seen some of my posts on other dramas, you will know that I constantly rant about the screenwriters ruining top source material and taking the audience for idiots. Many of the issues with scripts arise because there is no finalized script before filming starts, but this doesn’t seem to be the case with this one. Based on what I have heard, Tan Jianci rejected the initial script and only signed up once he was satisfied with the modifications. I think we can trust his judgment. BTW, ending of LLTG is a prime example of a rushed, unsatisfying ending (while the early episodes were dragged and repetitive). Not really a reference for good writing in my books. The success of the drama is owed manly to the actors.
March 9, 2026Based on the latest rumors, it is tentatively scheduled to air in mid-May and will be broadcast on…
Haha, pull the other one 😂 Nobody believes these rumours anymore. Even though it was on the iQiyi list, I refuse to trust any of this until after I’ve watched a couple of episodes.
it turns out that action director Li Bao Liang also worked on the action in Blossom, TPOB, and most recently PoJ.…
I don’t think there is much to worry about with this drama. So far everything that I have seen, from the costumes, over the leaks and teasers to the atmosphere on set, everything screams ‘quality production’.
Jin Zhongfang has a gun fighting scene today, but still looking so dashing 😍 𝟐𝟔𝟎𝟑𝟎𝟗|金爷好像遭遇伏击了🔫 http://xhslink.com/o/2vJ2UaVaSyT Copy and open Xiaohongshu to view the full post!
After seeing the discussion about how important the director and scriptwriter were and how faithful they were…
It is inevitable that there will be changes in a novel adaptation because what works on paper doesn’t necessarily work on screen. In novels we learn about the thoughts and feelings of one or several (depending on the narrative style) characters. In a drama, making characters “think aloud” cannot be used to the same extend. The director has to find ways to let the audience see these things. Some scenes are fine on paper but would be very boring to watch because they are too static.
It’s in chapter 26 (the first time that his character appears): “A tall and well-built man got out of the carriage. He was wearing a Qiren winter coat. He was Wanyan Jun, the brother of the Qiren Prime Minister, Han Xianwang.” I also don’t think that any of his actions were motivated by lust, but rather by wounded pride and a will to dominate/humiliate those who once looked down on him.
Answer: Put him in the desert!
