It's a complex story with multiple dependent variables acting together on independent variables, hence leading to certain outcome, so blame couldn't be pinned entirely on one person, but if we consider all the inter-connected factors FL mother did went overboard here. I am not saying she was willingly doing it or have any choice, but she is old and mature enough to understand the principle of "cause and effect" or consequences. It was her "self-preservation" mechanism that was acting up but ML mother was in the right too, treatment of servants was bad. Now one of her Son-in-Law is going to become minister and if her antics didn't improve, he is going to suffer a lot in her career as people will use it against him. I understand her past trauma but that doesn't give her justification to act up 24/7 and make things difficult for an innocent person, she should understand that all the hard work she put in over the years to improve the lives of her daughter will be ruined by her own hands.
