He already become an emperor since ep 1 , but rather a puppet emperor as he need to bow down & stay lay very low if he want his brothers to be save, the eunuch held the ultimate power & most ppl at the palace are his minion.

There's quite a backstory before it happens too where the previous emperor fail to defeat the eunuch which led to major casualty to those who loyal to the palace (Emperor) & Li Yan has been placed by the Eunuch as the puppet emperor after that.

You may try to watch the first 6 ep to know more about his character & know where he's coming from? What I get so far, he's quite a lonely & tormented character, it's not easy to live in that era. Situation might forced him & he had to bear the guilt and pay the price.
There always two tale of coins, we may not know the whole story & sometimes world just didn't came off as pure black and white.

Me too, Cheng Yi's killing me as well with his acting, am still having my withdrawal from LAR & can't move on from Si Feng rabbit hole (& his devoted unconditional love) but at the same time here I am, simping hard over Li Yan, two different character but Cheng Yi nailed them both that it caught me offguard, how can I simp over 2 polar opposite guys at the same time & both came from Cheng Yi, it's crazy 😂

Yes, a totally different character from Si Feng but he nailed it H to T that I fell hard on both 🙌😆

Cheng Yi , I'll cry & support your character wherever he may go, you always embodied your character & brought the characters to live that I'll never be able to look away from & there's no other road than root for you desperately.

Cheng Yi's portrayal always making me simping over his character badly, damn attractive, sexy & seeing his character always being tortured both internally physically is hurting me because of how real his acting portrayal is but that's also the beauty of his amazing acting!!💥❤❤❤

Oh, I wanna add one more thing, I used to think that it might be weird to see the otp here esp since am watching it rightaway coming from LAR, but thankfully it doesn't feel weird to me, might due to Cheng Yi had a quite different character here, with different set up, etc & last but not least chemistry are also present between Cheng Yi & Yu xi, not as strong but it's there & buildable, so am quite relieve.

Literally just subscribe wetv vip just to watch this, lol. The pacing is rather off, idk maybe because they cut 6 ep down from 55 to 49 ep so it's kinda confusing at start, but now I got it after watching all the first 6 ep,
My fav ep will be the 6th, there're nice moment between the otp & the plot picks up.
So maybe give them 6ep chance to decide whether it's for you or not?
As for me, am looking forward to their next ep.

It's hurting me to see the fate of Emperor Li Yan, he has no one whom he can trust, he must be feeling lonely to hv endured it all alone with all the pressure & opponent he has, Cheng Yi portrayed it beautifully & I love his character already, quite different from Si Feng but gosh, as charming & sexy!
Yan Zhi character also play a quite big part & she's a quite intriguing & unpredictable character, makes the drama more interesting to me.

Most of the cast on Love and redemption were being recast in this as well tho, lol, Ling long ex hubby had a quite plenty screentime & I see Wu Zhi Qi & Flying Snake as well, love to see them reunited although I find it's quite funny & nostalgic since I just finished watching L&R recently, I've even notice the same bamboo house Si Feng & Xuan Ji were living being used in here as well 🤣

She's written as a nuissance throughout the series 😂 🤷‍♀️
