BW : Soon after "Dream of Chang'an" was finished, you came to film "South Wind Knows My Mood". How do you adjust the status when you quickly switch between costume play and modern play?
Cheng Yi : Actually, there is no secret. You still have to understand more, try to figure it out, and understand the script to the best of your ability. Then you will have more room to play on the scene.
BW : It’s very late to finish filming every day. How do you keep yourself in a tired situation and do your homework for tomorrow’s scenes?
CY : It feels okay. When doing what I like, the whole person's state will be excited and happy, and will not feel tired. When I call for a card or call for work every day, it feels unfinished.
02 "Take it seriously, there will definitely be gains"
BW : When "Love and Redemption" was broadcast, you were filming "Dream of Chang'an", so you didn't have time to follow the show?
CY : Yes, it was my parents who sent me a WeChat message and told me, "Son, I saw your drama, and your drama is finally on!" Then they posted a lot of pictures of the drama in the group every day.
BW : Similar to the group that "loves each other's family"?
CY : Yes, yes (laughs), and my aunt and uncle were also in the group. At that time, it was like chasing a drama group.
BW : When did you find that "Love and Redemption" is particularly popular?
CY : Probably more than ten days after the show was broadcast, a reporter teacher said in an interview that many people watched "Love and Redemption". Later, I kept receiving news from relatives and friends that watching the drama and found comments on Weibo has also increased, and I know that it is very hot.
BW : What was it like at that time?
CY : As more people see it, of course I am very happy to be an actor. The actors in filming still want to present good works to the audience, so I will also look at everyone's comments and see how everyone feels after the drama. This process is also a process of continuous improvement.
BW : After the popularity of "Love and Redemption", your 70 ways of vomiting blood have been hotly discussed. Are these different forms of expression you designed, or is it a random expression of true feelings?
CY : When reading the script, I will definitely do some homework and make some small designs according to the plot, but when shooting on the spot, it depends on the situation on the spot. Like the camera position, the way of performing will be different, such as vomiting blood. On the set, together with the director, photography teacher, and martial art teacher, we can collide with various performance methods.
BW : After so many years of filming, do you deliberately pay attention to different ways of expressing emotions?
CY : It's not to the extent that it is specially designed, but you will pay attention to it when you watch it. For example, before the filming of "Love and Redemption", I would watch some works of fairy tales. Now this is a modern drama, so I will watch more modern dramas. I feel that I am still in the growing stage, so I need to see more, refer to more, and learn more.
BW : How do you generally feel when watching a movie? Where will the focus be?
CY : It was a bit weird after all when I watched my own play. I thought, "It would be better to act like this at the time." I feel a bit regretful, but the actor actually knows that art is a regret.
BW: Are there any regrets in every drama?
CY : Yes, in fact, every play will have regrets when it is finished. I will think about how it would be better at that time, sort out the areas that need improvement, and digest them as soon as possible, so that we can do better when we perform the next role.
BW : What do you think is the most important thing behind your achievements today?
CY : I think there are a lot of them. They cannot be said in a few words. For example, I insist on a lot of things, the support and giving of my parents and people around me, and the many people who help me along the way are all important.

BW : When did you first come up with the idea of being an actor?
CY : I first accompanied my friends to participate in a show. A teacher said that I was quite suitable. I felt a seed was buried in my heart at that time, but the impression of this industry was still very vague at that time. When I was studying, in addition to learning theoretical knowledge, I would also have some practice. In the process, I gradually strengthened my dream and felt that I must be an actor and a good actor.
BW : How did you deal with the stage when you just entered the industry, no audience commented on you, and kept going to the show?
CY : I think this is a process of growth, which every actor should go through. When you are young, you need to be denied, so that you can know your shortcomings more quickly. You need to maintain a good attitude. Beginners have a lot of ignorance and vagueness. They have to try more and learn how to accept and pass opportunities. Many things do not rely on others to tell you what to do, so you need to firmly dream, absorb and digest, and play each role well.
BW : When you participated in "First Grade" in 2016, you had a conversation with Director Ang Lee. Do you have any impressions when you recall?
CY : Actually, at each stage of life, everyone wants to ask different questions. I was nervous before going to see Director Li Ang, but when I saw him myself, I felt he is very gentle and made people feel no sense of distance. I think this conversation is very lucky, because it was Director Ang Lee who made me remember the relationship between "relaxation" and "concentration", which is like practicing Tai Chi. Only by relaxing can focus. His words have a great influence on me.
BW : Being an actor, when filming, and to become famous, you need to wait. How do you think about waiting?
CY : Waiting should have a better way to think about it. Waiting may be hope but unknown. I don’t know what will happen. The most important thing is to be yourself and adjust your mentality, wait for opportunities, and wait for the future. In this process Don't give up on yourself.
More often on the set, I’m waiting. I don’t think there is pure waiting. Everyone is waiting, right? In the process, you can listen to a song, learn something, or read a book, all of which are waiting. "Waiting" can actually do a lot of things.
BW : Will you have any theme you want to act in particular next?
CY : Many. Basically I want to try the ones I haven't played before. Great heroes, villains, police, etc. are all fine. I think I have just started.
BW : Will you imagine what you should shoot before the age of 30, and what to shoot before the age of 35?
CY : No, you don't know what will happen tomorrow, and you don't know what will happen in the future, so you will look more at the present.
BW : Will there be occupational anxiety?
CY : Life will always encounter some difficulties. I think everyone will have anxiety. I think it is better to actively adjust their mentality. Gradually digest, anxiety can also be transformed into motivation.
BW : When you encounter some difficulties or some problems, are you used to adjusting yourself, or to talk to others and communicate with others?
CY : Basically, it’s about self-regulation. Difficulties sometimes seem like scaring yourself. For example, when you were young, you might think that this stool is very high, like a ladder. You definitely can’t step over, but now looking back, you just stepped over. It is just a stool.
In the past few years, when he was not too busy, Cheng Yi could take advantage of his free time to sit by the river in Hengdian and pick up the fishing rod. In the quiet and long wait, he will welcome the big one that belongs to him, fish.
He doesn't think "waiting" is a very boring thing: "Waiting may be hope or unknown. In life, you have to keep waiting, waiting for tomorrow, and waiting for the day after tomorrow. I don't know what will happen, but adjust well. Mindset, don’t give up on yourself, you can wait for a better tomorrow."
In the long wait on filming site, he learned early how to use time, watching movies, reading books, learning something... He is used to arranging the waiting time fully. Even in a sense, he feels that there is no pure waiting-after all, in the so-called waiting process, you have to do something.
In him, a "beginner" mentality has been maintained. When he first entered the industry, he was out of the picture as he acted, which delayed the filming process. The theoretical knowledge learned in class needs to be "picked" again during the on-site shooting. The lens position, lighting, position, how to cooperate with the opponent, etc. are full of knowledge. Therefore, the studio is also another school and cannot tolerate the slightest sloppiness.
In the process of ignorant learning, some opportunities were passed by, some roles were deemed inappropriate, some performances left regrets... As he digested these regrets, he gradually grew and developed a force that forced him to become a beginner. The mentality to keep trying. "These things may not be what anyone tells you, but how you can absorb and digest yourself, strengthen your own dreams, and play every role well." He said to "Blog World."

After the old problems were solved, new problems continued to emerge. When preparing to shoot "Love and Redemption", in order to get familiar with the specific style of Xian Xia drama, he also browsed some Xian Xia dramas, looking for different states, and let him enter the role in advance. When filming "The South Wind Knows My Mood", he "aligned" modern dramas with similar story structures. After all, there is a difference in the performance mode from costume dramas.
