The difference is the drama's writing is repetitive and because they cut out a lot of character and simplified so much their lazy so they just let fuyao getting into trouble so easily... and need helps. When she can save herself, do the plotting , winning battles and thrones and get herself out of troubles on her own... not just get trapped, get injured, loose battle and cause troubles. And there are 7 men in the novel in the plot and willing to do everything for her... So they clearly won't be as repetitive as it's only her and Wuji are doing the same thing in the whole drama... In fact, in the drama Wuji doesn't appear much only the last part... he is guarding her from behind... and not in your face like how the drama showing... And he doesn't interfere her business either... The drama writing is pretty lazy... but they are clearly limited compared to the book

Well I can't remember clearly but even in the book, Fuyao is very flawed. She is selfish ( as she is afraid to get hurt and she pushing Wuji, ZBY to other girl without considering their feeling for example). She is fearless and so brave and emotional, loyal, stubborn and independent, would do anything for her friends and help their wishes including giving up her life. Those are her strengths and also her weaknesses. And the novel writer keeps it in her character until the end, whether you like it or not. There is growth but Fuyao won't be Fuyao anymore without those characteristics. Because without them she can't survive and did everything she have done in the novel. And per your standard and expectation you want her to changed just that. The difference is there are so much going on and Fuyao has accomplished so much even with all her weakness they are balance out and you don't find those need to be changed. But because they took out all her accomplishment so now you only see the cons and not the pros of it. Hence you demand the growth.
