Foreign citizens are entitled to student financial aid (not much though, something like 270 Eur/month max like local citizens) if they live in Finland on a permanent basis for the purpose other than studying and they have registered as permanent residents in the Finnish population register system. All universities everywhere can decide on whether or not to grant exceptional tuition waiving. If LYY worked with them (as it is shown he does as assistant lecturer), it is possible that his tuition was reduced.

The temperature difference was because they first went to Annecy (so I assume they went there by train from Paris airport, although it was not shown) almost at sea level with a warmer micro climate, and they drove up close to summit of the Mont Blanc 100 km away, in his rented car.

It is YinGuo (so the subtitles on WeTV sometimes machine translated to "Britain" ; there are other translating quirks btw, such as, in ep15 translating to "going to an island" when what he said was haiwai : going abroad, to France, specifically)

I agree about the cost of taxis in Europe; it is far more expensive than in China, but Chinese visitors, except in some cities where they can speak English or the local language, at least some, and have done their homework about getting around, will indeed splurge on taxis, so they don't get lost. Only after a little while does one get familiar enough with public transport to get around by bus, tram, train, bikes or walking, and only for those who are used to explore on their own like that. YG's focus is not so much doing sight seeing and learning about the other country.

She has friends or acquaintances in Finland and would rely on them for help, as she does in the first episode, to find a hotel, and on taxis to get there before the time of checking in has elapsed. (In the novel, where the foreign part in is the US, she was exhausted because she had to sleep in an airport, her hotel room having been released since she did not show up in time).

I am not too surprised the acquaintances did not offer to drive her, because in Northern Europe, driving a car has become extremely costly, so town people often don't have or use a car that much.
Renting a car is also very expensive. But totally understandable in episode 14, in the mountains, even for "students" : besides, LYY is not a pauper, just someone very thrifty who will splurge only for a good reason.
