Maybe because it’s a TV drama targeting the mass population. MDL followers are a different audience focused on the individual instead of family. My favorite manipulative TV MIL was in The centimeter of love. The MIL tried nag break up the main couple. Her parents kept siphoning money for her brother schemes. The FL was a pilot, the ML a doctor. I rewatched one scene because of this show. Her brother was Tan Jianci 👀. Wow. He really irritated me in that show. Brat, but I’m thinking of rewatching nah maybe not.
It helps that there’s nothing trivial to criticize her for like her hair.

For one, this is a slice of life drama about mindset not generations. If a person is from a poor background, their goals and desperation are different from other economic levels. More so if they experienced poverty due to war. It’s hard to relate, but you have to respect their drive.
The main problem is the mother-daughter relationship. The FL needs to openly communicate with her mom. She needs to explain how her world really works. The mom has a good heart, but needs to know her place. I think the mother thinks her daughter can’t stand up for herself. It’s sad that her grandmother took the open communication away from the mother. Clearly the FL communicates with the grandmother.
As for generalizations…I heartily disagree about boomers. If anything their children, the millennials, are the most disrespectful. Competing with their parents. They rather re-invent the wheel thinking they came up with an original idea instead of admitting they’re following their elders advice. A waste of time and energy. The irony of it all….they’ve come full circle…new generations are more judgmental and stubborn. They fail to realize that everything and everyone is a learning opportunity. Absorb instead of brush off. Listen and apply what suits you. Look at the failed opportunities here in the comments. We can learn and point out interesting things about the drama that others didn’t catch, but instead it’s all about pointing out the negative. SNL Debbie Downer alert.

The incredibly close intimacy between this mother and daughter is nice to see in contrast to the more restrained…
The difference is how the FL genuinely cares. Never bothered or irritated with her mom’s constant calling. She is kind and patient. Wish I could be that generous with my time. Maybe because I procrastinate? Then everyone and everything seems to hits at once. Fl is grace under pressure.

Do you mean this mass produced cdrama vs the top cdrama? There is no comparison. One is instant gratification to be forgotten when one of your idols churn out another. The other is an epic cdrama of the highest quality that will be remembered.
