I sometimes wonder if I watched the same drama as everyone else. Am I the only one sitting here like what a grand…
I said LDW acted really well in this. I wasn't as blown away by the rest of the cast. As I said, the female lead is a copy paste of almost all dramas. I don't consider Gong Yoo an amazing actor and this was no different. I feel he has limited range and if you've watched his other rom coms, there is little variations. This is just about similar to almost any other rom com he's in. That typical humor coupled with some "teary-eyed longing looks." I am surprised how many people are salty over my comment but I just found this to be a typical rom-com with some mild supernatural elements and some sprinkling of emotional scenes. This didn't get a low rating for being a rom-com, rather for being a cliché rom com with an interesting premise that was cast aside for some silly shallow scenes. I compared LDW to Matthew McConaughey because that guy all of a sudden started showing an acting range no one knew he had. The guy won an academy award, it should be clear that that was not an LDW criticism. He's the only one I felt actually acted pretty damn well. I think though what a lot of people consider good acting and what I do is very different. I mean my favorite actor is Han Suk Kyu. I can't stand Lee Jong Suk, yet he is way popular and praised in these parts. I skimmed through the drama after a certain number of episodes because the plot was treading on unbearable. As I said before, a meandering slow stream of a journey that didn't know where it was going. It is terribly paced. If this took your breath away, then good for you. PS. I should note, if it wasn't for LDW, that actor rating would be way lower...
Why why why didn't I listen and just skip to 13? I only wasted about an hour skipping through those other…
Honestly, K-drama fans are an unreliable bunch. I do think a vast majority of viewers are young or simply people who delight in romance which is why with the exception of signal, almost all the top K-dramas are rom-coms. This is yet another drama I started wondering if everyone was watching the same show. I was like why are people raving about this? It's really just a rom com. You can always count on me to be the debbie downer when it comes to reviews.
If you are the picky type out there, let my review set you up for the disappointment I felt... To be honest, this is a 7 at best,as in if I am being very generous.
I feel like there is little mention of the romance but honestly, it's kind of creepy. And this isn't even so much the age difference, I mean yes the fact that he's like 1000 years old and she's 18 is definitely pushing it but she's also quite immature. When I watch her gawk in a childish manner and acting cute, I look at him with his longing looks and the first thing I think is brah, get the hell away from her. I feel like his cuteness is what is making this not creepy for people but maybe because I am not into him, I just get the creeps.
I skipped from ep 5 to 13 and it honestly feels like I missed nothing! I also feel would have been a better story…
The thing though is that Goblin isn't really a deep story. What is one of the most important aspects of the story ends up being wall paper and we are all dragged through unnecessary waters to get there. At one point, I was wondering when will everything get revealed and that was when I was like on ep 4. Would they sell us bromance for the next ten episodes and pretend there is a plot here? Honestly, this story could be told in six episodes. Eight if we're being generous. On that note, I had no idea this is a KES drama and when you mentioned that, I was like, gosh, everything makes sense. Especially the female lead. I said yesterday, she was a recycled type of character because she is literally the stereotypical female lead in all KES dramas.
I skipped from ep 5 to 13 and it honestly feels like I missed nothing! I also feel would have been a better story without the goblin's wife as she is really not adding much to the story. Her character leaves a lot to be desired. I am also not sure if I should find it creepy that he's like 799 western age and she's 18. It's made them a tough relationship to swallow. He at times just makes me feel like he's fatherly especially when he strokes her head and she calls him ahjussi. It just feels very fatherly. They don't have the chemistry of a couple. That is the first kiss scene where I've just cringed.
I'm on ep 5 and struggling to continue and considering I've been drooling over the Reaper to get to these five episodes, wondering if I should continue. Can someone just spoil it for me? I don't think drooling over LDW is good enough to fool myself into thinking the story is going anywhere. The stereotypical romance and recycled female lead of a character is making what could be a great story really dull.
it feels dots in disguise over-hyped with no content got nothing going on but cinematography and good cast...i…
Yeah, I'm on ep 5 wondering if this gets good. I am only here drooling over LDW and that is not good enough for me to continue but damn, he is the only reason I've made it this far.
The Disguiser is the only one I've watched. I'm not sure I like these historicals or I simply haven't warmed up to it. In Western shows, I love it but in Asian dramas it's a little jarring. I did enjoy The Disguiser purely for entertainment value and it was at times so beautifully filmed.
Dropped on the 22nd episode mainly because I got a little bored and started watching West World and now, I'm too tainted by West World to come back so I'm going to need spoilers. To be fair, the drama stagnated for me because the plot felt a little drawn out, the whole Weiyong gets in trouble, gets out of trouble, then has some manufactured romance with the prince and then denies his affections was wearing on me. Also, the tendency for it to get somewhat preachy. There are times I just wish she would be more ruthless. It made me like the villains more.
Definitely not a good one for me. Wow, I don't know why people rate the production as top notch and marvel at…
I'm frankly surprised most people didn't notice, then again I have edited video. Also, honestly, I have absolutely no idea what you're saying. I didn't say this movie has no great scenes. The fighting is pretty fun for the most part. Think it's funny you diss hollywood when this movie is definitely taking some notes from hollywood. Come on, fight scenes to an orchestra playing? If that isn't hollywoodish, what is? . I didn't even dock points for that. Also, definitely does not focus on nature. The whole movie has an almost animated twinge to it. Also, definitely the atmosphere does nothing to highlight the era. In fact, that works in its favor. This movie feels very modern. I'm a huge lover of historicals and I've read a bunch of Eiji Yoshikawa's novels (Musashi, Taiko, A Heike Story). I'd say if you think I know nothing of the era or japanese historicals think again. Since you bring hollywood into this for some odd reason.
Very worried about this. On one hand such good reviews, on the other hand, the only thriller that has every surpassed my expectation was old boy. Ugh, tempted to watch but also very worried. Often highly rated Korean dramas end up being very mediocre to me.
Definitely not a good one for me. Wow, I don't know why people rate the production as top notch and marvel at the cinematography as sorry folks, didn't see it. Many times the lighting felt a little jarring and the fight scenes could have definitely used less cuts. The lighting also switches to a rather bland daylight in between atmospheric grays and the climax is just underwhelming. I am really struggling as to why this is rated so highly production wise. Japan has had some amazing productions and especially in terms of atmosphere they just really know how to set the scene. Why is this one so rated highly?

I think you should read my initial comment, and genuinely understand what I'm saying before replying to it but for the sake of simplicity I will quote myself " people genuinely deserve to KNOW WHETHER OR NOT they want to sit through this crap."
Anyway, to those above I have decided to honor the admin and simply remove my review. I quite like this site and since I do plan to continue some article writing, no need to fuss about it.
I just realized I had that Woman in the Dunes novel but have no idea where it is. Might be at my mom's house. I never finished it because I was far more intrigued with my Eiji Yoshikawa novels.

That's the thing, the basis was one can't review a drama if you haven't finished it but I tolerated 8 episodes and have absolutely no plans to finish. Tis basically dropped for me.
Can I just say I liked the character who spoke English the most in this drama. It was not only good English but absolutely fucking hilarious every damn time he did it and the comments made it more so. Everytime he appeared, it was like "ugh, here he goes with his English" and I would just completely lose it especially the rest of the cast acting along with it like they understood what the hell he was saying. XD
