The central focus of the story is on Hee Su and his experiences as a gay man, and the introduction of the "straight" storyline is an intrusion into this space
And the ratio of fans complaining about us complaining to those of us voicing our grievances is 1:1. There's as much pushback against the complaints as there are complaints themselves
"I do not have the time for unnecessary agreement with the clowns in this comment section"You're calling other…
I'm a lesbian, and I'm passionate about seeing gay stories and relationships in media (both m/m and f/f)
When gay works aren't treated with the same respect and consideration as "straight" works, it detracts from my enjoyment
Adaptations of "straight" works rarely consider adding a gay couple to broaden their appeal to BL fans. In contrast, adaptations of gay works censor the gay themes or include a "straight" storyline to broaden their appeal to homophobes. The unequal treatment of gay stories disappoints me. That's where the anger and complains are coming from
"And people accept bl tropes in a straight story line ,it’s you bl people that cannot accept a straight trope"
From my experience, the inclusion of gay characters and storylines in mainstream media faces backlash and resistance from "straight" identifying audiences. They're not accepting
I cannot believe people are mad cos there’s a straight couple in this drama,I mean are yall that messed up that…
"I do not have the time for unnecessary agreement with the clowns in this comment section"
You're calling other people clowns for wanting a BL to be, you know, BL and making a circus out of this whole thing yourselves. Can't you fathom that different people enjoy different things?
Most fans of "straight" storylines aren't fans of BLs, do you push them to watch BLs? BL fans don't have to be fans of "straight" storylines either
People complaining about straightifying BL, I hear you and i feel you. Unfortunately we have to put up with it…
"... skip the parts where they steal the spotlight to the straight couple ok? We're gonna be alright. Gwenchana 😁"
You know how I feel about the adaptation, I'm not sold on it, but you and @Kate seem nice and your tolerance of my/other people's differing beliefs has motivated me to watch two more episodes before I make a final decision
I think the change to put chan young in a love line with a girl is acutally ok, it acts as a plot device so that…
It's lazy writing
A "straight" story moving a gay story forward is an overused trope that shows a lack of creativity on the part of the script writers. There are other ways to move on. Chan Young could communicate he's not interested in Hee Su indirectly, avoiding one-on-one time with him and not responding to his advances. Or he could have an honest, direct conversation with Hee Su, explaining he doesn't share the same feelings. Why does Chan Young have to be with a girl for Hee Su to know he's not interested? "No" means "no." He'd learn to move on
Talking about "changing the profile on Korean entertainment industry" while supporting the straightwashing of…
Even if the main couple remains gay, straightwashing has occurred through the erasure of the second main gay storyline and themes, diminishing the visibility of gay representation beyond the first gay couple
There's a lot of story left to unfold in the remaining 8 episodes, what if the "straight" storyline dominates the gay one?
BL stories might be niche in Korea, but they have a dedicated fanbase domestically and internationally. There is a market for them. And Korea isn't brave enough to tap into this potential. That's their problem
"It does not have to be one or the other"
I know what you mean
What I mean is the source material was deemed "too gay" for adaptation. They should've written a new story that includes gay and "straight" themes. There was no need for straightwashing or sacrificing the integrity of the source material
Boys over Flowers k-drama remake coming soon starring Cha Jung Woo as Goo Joon Pyo, Kim Jun Seo as Yoon Ji Hoo,…
Why remake the same "straight" story with different actors over and over?
"It's like having your favorite BL series to be remade but just then up straightwashed"
There's a difference between turning a gay story "straight" (contributes to the erasure of gay stories) and turning a "straight" story gay (adds much-needed representation)
And gay stories are almost always shoved in closets, diluted, trampled on. I’m game for a radical retaliation that combats the chronic disrespect for gay stories by dousing "straight" stories in a rainbow-colored overhaul and turning them gay
"Also I would love to see the actors Kim Jun Seo, Cha Sun Hyung, Cha Jung Woo & Kim Ho Young in different roles"
They'll most likely limit themselves to "straight" roles after this, which is unfortunate
I see some people complaining we have a straight second couple, but like... do you guys want a better quality…
Talking about "changing the profile on Korean entertainment industry" while supporting the straightwashing of gay works as the norm doesn't drive change. It keeps your foot on the brakes. They'll see it's profitable, and there'll be more instances of our favorite gay stories being erased or changed
Separating BLs and "straight" dramas provides dedicated spaces for different experiences and preferences. Some people prefer BLs, some don't. I prefer BLs, and to me, it's a step backwards that these stories are changed to fit societal norms
It's easy to write off complaints as "nit-picking," but some fans of the source material expect a more accurate,…
Change for the sake of change isn't always a good thing. In cases where there are too many changes, and an adaptation deviates too much from the source material, one might question the purpose of the adaptation. The producers would've been more successful in their endeavors by channeling their creativity or lack thereof into a new story rather than forcing an existing one to conform to their preferences and a different medium
I'll agree we're seeing a small piece of the larger picture. We should withhold our final verdict until we've seen more of the story unfold. Then we can answer the question, "has it deviated too much?"
"... we've barely seen/know who the straight couple is"
From what we've seen in the trailer, it's Chan Young and Ji Yu
Some comments read like folks were prepared to have issues with this show and since the issues didn't come up…
It's easy to write off complaints as "nit-picking," but some fans of the source material expect a more accurate, faithful depiction of the gay relationships, which this drama has yet to deliver
The request for KBLs to do a better job and stick to the source material isn't an unreasonable one
last 2 eps are boring and cringe..i cant even stand sanghyeon.. 🤧🤧
You can't stand Seong Hyeon?
Seong Hyeon is the human equivalent of sunshine, and those of you rolling your eyes at a man who doesn’t need a redemption arc because he was written with decency from the start are out here choosing to be a cave. You're a psychological marvel. Truly, a thesis-worthy case of taste deficiency
