yes, both the book and drama are her story and I’m sure some things she may have wanted to alter in the book she did for the drama. But I do wonder how much of the screenwriting had outside pressure and input to change or edit out some things.

I don’t understand why they made so many changes in the back half of the drama. Someone else alluded to it being based on star power and C-ENT politics but it’s just strange. The new 40 episode rule doesn’t even make sense because they could have made season2/Part 2 40 episodes and not had to edit out/cut down scenes. They changed & edited out some important dialogue…. and then did weird things like with changing crucial points in the story,FFYY & Jing’s convo, XY & Jing’s web hammock, Jing’s proposal, Fenglong telling XY Jing came to see him to cancel the wedding bcs she wasn’t happy. XY going to her parents house with only Jing & Step father not CX. XY & Jing bowing to her parents portrait not CX or XL. I think they are trying to spread the screen time so much between all 3 men that in the end that theyve kind of ruined a lot of it. Missed potential indeed.

I love this analysis. That XaioYao is Xiang Lu’s living face. She’s the version that chooses life and love while he’s the version that chooses sacrifice and death. In many ways he vicariously lives through her and her life and love. I’ve often thought that there is a lot of subtext to XiangLu’s many complicated feelings many of which are romantic towards her yes but many of which also seem like they are a yearning to live instead of die. In XaioYao he meets someone with a tragic background of abandonment like him, someone he can deeply relate to, and she provides a path of what life can be if you choose to live and love and open your heart. So some of his yearning isn’t just the idea of a life with XaioYao, but choosing to live. Period. And with the couple bug he gets to vicariously experience many of those feelings he never may have felt before. He’s known his path from the start and he chose every step of the way to stay on that path, but he takes some solace in knowing that through XaioYao he also felt life and love and what the different path could be, and helping her have what he never could.

the character development is that she’s working through her trauma that she never got to work through as most young women do because she had to be in constant survival mode as XaioLiu. So now, she is for the first time not in constant survival mode, able to experience the highs and lows of love that girls usually go through earlier but she wasn’t able to, resolving her trust issue traumas with everyone around her……. I think people feel like she’s “regressing” because they aren’t accounting for the fact that she never got to go through ANY of this for the hundreds of years she was hiding as Xaoiliu. So people want her to be mature and hardened like XaoiLui. But the whole purpose of her getting to be XAIOYAO is to go through all the things she missed as XaioYao, answering unanswered questions, feeling love and heartbreak, being a girl/ Woman. And most of all, figuring out what will make HER happy.

I think on her side there is enormous affection there and kinship. And there was an opportunity for her to open her heart to him as FFB when she was trying to get over Jing during their break, but even during their break, she mostly used FFB as a tool to hurt Jing or make Jing jealous. FFB was a companion, a companion she felt deep feelings for and maybe could have fallen for given time & different circumstance. XL is more complicated and I think she feels both fear and affection for him. He terrifies her but also comforts her. And she doesn’t want to fear her lover. So I think she loves him, but she’s not and never has been IN love with him. And I think he clearly knows this. And it breaks his heart. But he is at his core incredibly unselfish and willing to do everything he can to give her what she wants, even if it’s not him.
