In the novel, the peacock king became evil and wanted power. He collaborated with Qing Lin to kill the demon king and left traces behind to prove he was killed by a senior immortal official. However, in the novel the Demon King was brother of Lin Mo (she didn't kill Lin Mo because she loved him). It seems that they merged these 2 characters so I could not guess the reason of the war anymore.
