Actually, he was supposed to die. That's the whole premise of the Six (whatever they translated it to) cultivation thing. In order to cultivate it, the other has to be fully willing to die for them.
What happened was that Ye BaiYi actually transferred his cultivation to WKX, thus WKX already had the six cultivation thing and was able to save ZZS whilst not dying himself - though he did use up all his energy so technically lost his mortal self entirely which is why his hair turned white (?).

YBY's partner already died therefore he doesn't feel any longing for this world anymore. YBY's only goal was to fulfill his promise to rid the Ghost Valley as well as to understand his pupil's death (his pupil (Rong Xuan) was actually YBY's one-sided crush's son). Seeing as that was fulfilled, YBY had no reason to stay in this world anymore and felt a debt to save WKX.

But I think watching and understanding are two different matters x) Like if you wanted to, you can complete the series and just watch the fluff. A lot of things are also explainable just by actions (like how in love with each other they are ehe).
If you want to understand how and why the plot progresses in certain ways, well that's another matter HAHA.

I'll watch Episode 27&28 later tonight since they just came out and update later if I remember to, but for now, in Episode 26, WKX sees a ghost while in town and follows her back to find some of them camped out in hiding. They explain to him the current situation they're facing and I think he's realizing how he's pretty much lost control (though idk if he actually cares).
Zhao Jing/Scorpion also has released a book listing the ghost valley superiors, and WKX is on the front page. Won't be long till ZZS finds this I bet. He also already has an inkling of WKX's true identity at this point, so I trust it'll all come together in a few more episodes.
Since the novel is based on Priest's writing and the show's been pretty faithful so far, I wouldn't call it lazy writing at all. Right now could be considered that phase where each character is just trying to figure out their place in this world as more truths and complications are unveiled.

I'm a Xiao Zhan fan but I don't think that is fair at all.
This program is amazing even without him. I believe the guest star was only a rumor anyways. Yes, I'm disappointed, but I won't use his name to talk shit about a show. That only hurts him. Plus, having Xiao Zhan on this show would actually harm this show as well, and his own policy is to not hurt others. True fans also should not be using his name to drag others. In his own words, "别伤害到别人"

Not sure why Season 2 has worse ratings than Season 1, but the new cast is absolutely hilarious and they have way better chemistry than the Season 1 cast.
Hopefully, there are English subs available for everyone :) It's really such a gem of a show <3
