I must say, I'm a little disappointed with the costume design of this drama. Even Xiao Yao dressed as Grand Princess her red costume just looks NICE but NOT great looking.
Actually, I have never seen a good looking costume design in any Tencent drama. Maybe their style of INTENTIONALLY being bland/uninspiring in costume design.
Compare to Bai XiaoChun from Youku production. Something like this costume better designed than 99.99% of Tencent drama costumes!
This char looks like a hero I wanna watch, Tencent ML's costumes... NOT so much!
(Plus don't get me started on Song Junwan female costume from above Youku production -- her outfit the ALPHA of ALPHA females makes Tencent female costumes all bow down and kneel to hers!)
Even with The Untamed many have expressed dissatisfaction with the weird sleeves of their hanfu costumes!
Tencent should REALLY fire all their costume designers and poach from Youku. To DATE I have never, and I mean NEVER seen a nice costume in any SINGLE Tencent drama. How can you be China's BIGGEST C-ent company and have so BAD sense of fashion?!?!
Tencent costumes are so ugly. I dunno all their ANIME characters have killer stylish looks, probably the best-looking 3-D CGI/2D girls and boys, men and women in the industry, yet their drama costumes are so bland. It's like they're two different companies, Tencent Anime and Tencent Drama, and the latter sux at designing costumes!
Also, I noticed Dou Luo Continent ANIME the story is meant for intelligent ppl with BIG BRAIN, then they go and dumb ALL it down in their live action drama. Mirror: Twin Cities ANIME is so kick arse, but TLP drama it seems is written for 5 year olds!
The only exception probably The Untamed. THAT drama as good as the original ANIME version (not that "Q" alteration/variant).

I heard S2 is only like 20-30 episodes long. They already recouped their investment by airing S1. S2 is just the cherry on top. Why wouldn't they do a movie to compensate the viewer? It probably only costs 25% of the money they would have spent filming a 40-episode drama. 2hr movie vs 45minx40 episodes season, do the math it not hard to choose to pull off the former!

Just like Wu JIng superseeded Jet Li and Jackie Chan to become the new action hero megastar. XZ is no more after TLP. YangYang is no more after suffering humongous bashing/backlash in his latest drama. There's only Zhang Ruoyun left to take the throne in C-ent!!
This drama was made in response to Disney making Mulan live action. Tencent needed a girl plays boy drama as a quick addition to their portfolio. That's why this drama got made.
Having said that I'm enjoying this drama much more than The Longest Promise. To date I've only ever dropped two Tencent dramas, even though I've complained plenty about a lot of them. The two Tencent dramas I NEVER want to finish: 1. Splendor of life -- I simply don't like watching Liu YiFei, that actress not even pretty. 2. The Longest Promise -- I hate asexual ML's that never show any affections to the FL. Reminds me too much of watching Jet Li, whom I dislike as much as Liu YiFei. Jet Li never shows romantic affections to the FL in any of his movies, he's the biggest asexual hero in the world and Longest Promise ML took too much cue from Jet!
Asexual hero -- reluctant to show any affection to FL. This type of drama does no good for China's low birth rate problem! I'm never going to watch another Xiao Zhan drama after this.
The biggest asexual hero in the world is Mr. Jet Li. My Dad literally shoved Jet Li into my face while I was growing up I had no choice. I'm now much older and never want to see another Jet Li movie ever again. Jet Li is the MOST asexual hero in the world. His character never shows romantic interest in the FL in ANY of his movies, then the guy (in real life) goes and cheats on his (first) wife with his co-star while filming in the studio.
Biggest scumbag in the world, Jet Li supposed to be China national hero, yet he doesn't even like China that y he moved to Singapore now! XIao Zhan closely following Jet's path... Shi Ying the biggest asexual hero I'd seen in a while! Not only that in TLP, there are certain camera angles on Xiao Zhan that made him look/act/talk like the new next gen asexual Jet Li type actor/character. The resemblance of Xiao Zhan to Jet Li in this drama just too striking!
Contrast Mr. Jackie Chan who even (accidentally) grabbed a girl's boobs in one of his movies (I think it was in Mr. Nice Guy or something like that)... While Jet Li thinks all girls got coodies ... like Mr. Goody Tissue Shi Ying even up to Ep 30 no chemistry between ML and FL! Whereas Jackie Chan would have hit it off with the FL starting from Ep03... NOT that I like Jackie Chan, I equally hate him as I hate Jet Li, but Jackie Chan plays romantically more honest characters true to their feelings in his movies!

It not XZ fault, after Untamed he could only land roles of goody goody tissue MC. Aka Mr. Nice Guy both in Youth Memories and Longest Promise, this kind of char sux has no life.
I rather MC is devious and cunning at first then becomes nice later on opposite the roles XZ only managed to land after WWX!!
Or rather it more interesting if MC starts out NOT give damn if world burns and goes to hell then slowly cares bout it not like sux ShiYing Nice Priest feels has to shoulder burden of whole world right from the start!
This post spoiled the drama for me. Really ends like Mirror: Twin Cities? That drama I dropped at EP11 I think.
I don't think will finish Longest Promise though reading from some of the negative (but insightful) stuff ppl have said after having watched all 40 eps.
I tired of this romance between teacher and disciple stuff with no value added. Haven't we all seen enough of ChongZi and Castle in the Sky2?
ALSO, I watched this on a movie projector. The CGI scenes where they filmed the foreground in real life but replaced the background with CGI content look really off. Tencent needs to improve their game to make scenes look more real. You can tell right away those scenes are fake.
