Since they changed the ML from Yumo (in the original novel) to Yingyuan/Tangzhou (in the drama), I think only less than 80% of the novel that will be adapted. And in my opinion, if they want to make a happy ending for Yingyuan/Tangzhou and Yandan, I think they will make aditional story to make it possible for their happy ending, so that's why the drama that long. I think at first he protect her because she is the only suitable person he can "use" as his "sword" and to make it seems as if he attracted to her to deceive his enemy. It's part of his plan I think. About their love, at earlier episodes they're just acting (Cheng Ruoyu said that in later episode, around ep 13 or 14 I think). They never show the scene about their agreement about this acting. But I think at first it's just part of Qi Yan's plan/strategy to deceive the enemy, and Cheng Ruoyu has tacit understanding about his plan. And later in the process they doing the acting, they slowly fall in love for real.
