For the con you mentioned, I think it was necessary. With her grace and demeanor, everyone saying Wei Shao is lucky to have her, even wei shao himself, despite all their conflicts, it's inevitable. Because of this sub plot, we got these iconic lines from Wei Shao and Grandma wei. WS- "If any other man dares come near you, I won't hesitate to kill him. But not him." even Manman who is always so clever with words find difficult to respond to this. Because she knows he loves this cousin like a brother. Grandma - "As the saying goes, don't covet a friend's wife." and i really like how Wei Yan responded to this. he understood his feelings were wrong. but then the 2nd FL just had to add more problem to the Wei's like gas to a fire. but that's another story. Cousin in law IMO had weak acting, but his character writing was superb.

for one, the leads of this drama convince me that they love each other just with the looks they give each other. Especially with the premise that they have a blood feud between them. FL is not whiny, she's tiny but her actions are benevolent and she's clever. ML is strong, powerful, but has a soft side. They sometimes steal glances at each other and i could guess what they are thinking based on the point of the plot. They could act. The FL leads the acting score in this cast, she can cry with convincing emotions. and then the ML, follows suit. But note, this is not a sobfest. It has its tension handled and served well, and yet it can still serve a bit of comedy, without overdoing it. Just pure script masterpiece on those parts. I had to rewind many moments especially with the 4 generals. hahaha and the villains are not one dimensional. They're evil, but they became such for a reason, mainly, childhood trauma. The villains also act well. On the contrary, for one D characters I could say, the grandma and the ML mother were such, however it doesn't matter because they don't need much focus. Just being the supportive and logical grandma, and annoying gullible mother would do it for their characters. SML was a trippy one, i thought he was weak, the actor was also giving kinda weak acting. However his character writing was good. saved by the writer. The writing for this drama is a good one, given the source material. The director also knows which scenes to portray. Unlike some shows that are all over the plot with no point going on. This one shows it knows where it is going. ex. at one point, Manman's first suitor (cousin), didn't bother with the bethrotal gift, they just presented her a weasel. in the latter episodes, after going through so much between FL and ML to get hitched, he sealed the deal with a lynx as betrothal gift, which the cousin suitor couldn't provide. Another, the SML cousin bro of ML, wasn't in love at all with the FL when they first met. He drew 2 paintings of her, first was a farce which the ML didn't bother because he knows his cousin just want to break them apart. the 2nd painting, was at first faceless. SML didn't know he was falling in love with Manman, then there was a family problem involving him, she saved his honor. Then he drew her face on the faceless painting. This lead to the tapestry burning scene. ML got frighteningly jealous. The plot progression is on point for all these subplots. Even the side characters have sensible plots and still relevant, not going astray from the main plot. Main plot involves the romance of mainleads, however the background of the main plot is their campaign for water management to benefit the whole kingdom. There were 2 mayors, one from each region they spent significant times in. Panyi and Xindu, Panyi is the gatesource of the water, part of her dowry, is the Qiaos territory, and Xindu where the ML's family were slain in the past, and now he's retaken it from the enemies. Xindu and Panyi mayors had a cute frenemy situation adding flavor to the political plot. This was sustained and concluded in the ending, heroic sacrifice ending for the 2 mayors. These are just a few of what i've noticed that are good things about this show. There's a lot, the half jade token, the spear, the heart armor, her gifts to him, the pillow, the belt, his gifts to her, the hairpin (kinda weak tbh), the stone slab (funny hilarious). The producers put attention to detail. ex. he has trauma with sleeping without light. so throughout the show, hundreds of candles lit during sleeptime, this was after showing her subtly changing the candles to better ones in the mansion. And mealtime, writer knows how to use this for plot progression. At the start, they never share meals. Then FL figures to gain his trust, she starts preparing his food, with his favorites. Key to the mans heart is through his stomach. He seems to like this, even just for the food at first. Then they discuss things over meals. Not simple discussion, at times they were trying to catch spies and lies between them, while eating a meal together. And throughout the story, they had several falling out moments. When he's cross with her, he doesn't go home for meals. lol. However she on the other hand can never do this, the home is her fort. While he makes excuses cause he can go to war campaigns, and sleep at the government office when he's upset with her. They seem to really patterned this behavior with real life married couples. Research team knew the assignment.

yes. super. he protected the homecourt, where the women were left while the men where fighting a war somewhere. he made his grandma proud. if not for him, feifei and xiaoqiao would not have been safe

One is naturally funny, and romantically linked to Manman's maid. Another is like the funny second eldest or eldest who is a casanova in reputation and also a funny guy. The other two are just following their antics but one is the youngest and he's really cute, very innocent, the other is very quiet and observant. But they are all working on one brain. they only know how to fight, everything else, they need a good advisor and Wei Shao's directions. i love how they are loyal and with them by your side you feel secure.

As a leader, he has such good abilities and he is fair, no doubt, but absolutely low EQ. so i searched what are the other types of intelligence. there's IQ and EQ, and SQ - social quotient, AQ- adversity quotient. I think he marks high on the adversity quotient only, which means one’s ability to overcome challenges or adversity.

i think the baby is really the palcheoki. it seems the guy who retrieve the baby is a royal soldier. this checks out the 100 year timeframe. i watched ep 1 and it seems there's a political warfare going on, this affects the village which is burning. the narrator says it also affected gangcheori's ascension to some extent. the ghost in the present as of latest ep while possesing the blind shaman, asks gangcheori why he is blaming him for the failed ascension, it was not his fault seeing the dragon. and something about the royal family should be blamed. so my theory is that the war/village ransack happened 100 years ago caused by the royal family. the baby who saw gangcheol was retrieved by a soldier, and raised to become a general. over time, the famine, caused by gangcheori because he hated the humans, caused the royal family to wage wars, with the general who will eventually become the 8 foot tall ghost. he dies with a grudge against the royal bloodline. this is just a theory. and we'll know for sure next week with the suceeding episodes.

who says music cannot transcend thru time? lol. as a modern day person, it's specially touching to hear modern day music in historical dramas i watch hahahah. way to cut the tension, and stress from watching the recent episodes. and they chose a good piece too, it fits the scene. there is a good mix of atmosphere in each ep. can't take if it's all scheming and other boring stuff, love that they make this Wei Yan a grey character. hope they keep this up, as long as they don't overdo it.
