I don't understand what you are trying to say. This is a fantasy epic love story. If people just move on because of hardship that will be very lame for the drama. It's not like real life has merman. For story perspective it's romantic and this way we don't get to see stupid and desperate concubine like other dramas.

His mark went away because he choose his gender. In the drama all merpeople are born genderless. Only after they fall in love, they choose their gender. That mark signify that they still haven't chosen. Since Su Mo feel in love with Bai Ying, he choose his gender as male.
