Production used him to invite investments and once money secured, others started bringing own scriptwriters and negotiate scenes. I don't like to drag the politic of behind the scenes but he was badly cut here. They cut the progression of his feeling in many scenes. Actually this drama airing time was brought forward because platform didn't approve the airing and asked production to re-edit to include his scenes in episodes leading to finale because they totally cut him out, in order words no ML in the last 6 eps.

The character design is different. His character here is the taoist priest with years of living up the mountain. He's not accustomed to the lively, worldly life so he got an upright, stoic temperament and he's not interested in the life outside his work. To have expression galore like Gu Yanzhen would be out of character. His recent character that is a bit lively and full of life is Li Ni from Wonderland of Love but I'm not sure you have watched that already or not. He always adhere to characters' setting. Mei Zhuyu character here warms up as the story progress but too bad they omit most of his final development to give more screentime for the supporting characters.

Yep, haters and rival fans keep fanning it in order to borrow public hands to persecute him. But they misjudged public impression on him upon checking out his works and variety shows.
