This is due to fierce competition for resources and genuine credit is hard to come by. So they paid the marketing to boost chances of artists being seen and have better chances to compete for resources. For Xu Kai, the dramas that he received praise for performance are The Legends, Lingjian Mountain, Ancient Love Poetry, Sword & Fairy, As Beautiful As You, Best Choice Ever and Eight Hundred. In C-dramas industry, quality projects are reserved for people with connection and industry-promoted actors. Xu Kai is not acting-graduate so it's a bit hard for him to get top quality projects. Even if he landed big project like Moonlit Reunion with Linmon production,you can see the level of sabotage he received. Almost to the brink of booted out from industry. I'm not sure if you have check out Eight Hundred. This project does not assembled top class team but the quality has been regarded as dark horse for the low budget project after it aired. Xu Kai's advantage is his name is big. so once his name listed in the project, investors will come in and production can start filming. not everyone have this advantage so most will cling to popular drama, negotiate scenes for support role and a little bit of character recognition can ensure you the next job. when they negotiate the scenes, eventually other scenes will be ratioed to meet the target number of episodes. this is where his agency should step in to protect his role as per agreed contract but obviously his agency didn't do their job. most of the time these big artists job is to help lesser known actors getting job and help the drama get recognition. look at yang yang, his fans are fighting with production because they saw the script that will prioritize story of 2nd ML. Wang Kai also suffers the same, his recently finished drama shows his screentime is less than the other 2 MLs when in fact for investments, he's the one who carry it. How do you expect XK company to protect him. His Court Lady which produce by his own company only got average 6mins appearance.
