This is how they are made! If you are looking for a work of art, a realistic slice of life or a healthy relationship, skip this drama. If you enjoy a roller coaster ride of emotions, want to have you heart beating fast and your eyes glued to the screen for 5 hours straight, go for this one!
While it's not realistic, it's also not totally absurd like some other mini-dramas. Plot holes are small, more stuff like does he have to be shirtless all the time (yes he does). And as people who have seen Dai Gao Zheng in other dramas already know, he's not just a pretty shirtless boy, he's also a really good actor.
I have watched both and prefer the Korean version. Lee Joon Gi’s performance is very charismatic.
I just finished with this one and came to give you my report :) First I'd like to say that I would not call myself a fan of the original Chinese version. It's not one of my favorite dramas. It did however leave a big impression so that I remember many things about it even thought is been a couple of years and A LOT of dramas since I saw it. I felt it was unique in the way how *real* it felt. You know usually these historical dramas are so obviously drama history, plot armor etc. Just meant to be entertaining, not true to what life was like back then. And that is fine for me, I do love some absurdity myself. But watching Chinese Scarlet Heart I felt like it could have been just like that. And everything the characters did, was so understandable and yet heart-wrenching. Like the 4th prince and his actions. He did not turn evil, he did not have traumas, he just did what he had to do and it still was terrible. The lacking part was the main lead's romance, I never got why Ruoxi fell for the 4th prince. This was very different in kdrama version. The love game was strong from early on, the 4th princes backstory was interesting etc. I had huge hopes. But later on it felt like everything was a bit off. It felt like they tried to keep the important plot elements from the original version, but maybe it was the changes they made of maybe it was that the kdrama was shorter, but the characters just did not have the same motivation so that their actions would have made sense. People just suddenly changed and did weird things. Many questions were not answered, but with cdrama I felt there were not that many questions, because everything just made sense. All in all, I'm glad I watched this one too and it was good in many ways, but the essential piece that made the original Chinese Scarlet Heart so unique and unforgettable was not there. This was more typical, but still kept me hooked!
LGJ is so powerful in this drama. it looked like its based on true story of Goryeo's King Gwangjong.
Since it's based on the original Chinese version, which was based on Chinese history, it was interesting to see how they adapted it to fit Korean history. They even managed to keep the prince's birth order, so that 4th prince is the lead in both.
I agree. She’s a loving, caring, reasonable princess. Wanting to save someone’s life, even if that person…
Do you mean how she revenged getting poisoned to death by giving him a rash - and then sending him the medicine to cure that rash? To me that seemed pretty mild. I many dramas FL stabs the ML for a misunderstanding :D
Just finished. I liked this very much. After watching 200 dramas I get easily bored, but this one managed to keep my interest until the and. Good pacing. Loved both leads, I don't know why the FL gets so much hate. I also read some chapters of the original novel and it seems like this is quite faithful adaption, which is always nice.
7 eps in. After reading the comments I went in expecting a childish, frustrating FL. To me surprise, I was met with a super calm, logical, reasonable, smart woman, who's only possibly fault is being too forgiving.
Does it have any chance to have season 2? I heard somewhere chinese dramas don't get multiple seasons. But it…
You heard right. Asian dramas are usually made to so that the ending is an actual ending, not a cliffhanger to another season like in western tv-series. That is one of the reasons I love them :) But there are exceptions, sometimes a Chinese drama is split in two seasons or there is another season, which tells another story about the same characters.
I have seen the original Scarlet Heart (Chinese) and somehow can't get myself to try this one. Can someone who has seen both version tell be is there something that is so much better in this version that it would be worth watching also this? Does this give much more in some area?
I'm on the second episode and so confused. Who is which prince? What logic or reasoning does the FL have to justify…
- The one who looks the youngest (at least in my opinion) is the oldest, then the crown prince, then the third prince. I agree that it was confusing at first. Other princes are still young and not shown. - FL saw crown princes logo thing when her family was murdered - ML is the crown prince because he is the only child of the late empress, who was also the emperor's childhood sweetheart and the emperor decides who is the CP. The other princes are children from the concubines. - The third prince is the child of the consort Shu, the evil woman who is now the emperor's favorite as the empress is dead. - I don't think FL was talking to her father. You are probably confusing something. Maybe she was talking to the emperor and calling him father because he is her father-in-law? Or then she was talking to doctor Liu, her old family friend? - I think this drama pretty much made sense, as far as dramas usually do.
The director told her to stand and stare at him wide eyed for a full minute while he worked on her lips? Must…
Yes it does seem weird for me too, when I think about it from my own perpective. But my point is to back the original commenter, that it’s not the actresses fault or even the director’s fault. The person to blame or better yet to ask about this should be the writer of the original novel. Maybe she could explain why the character reacted like this.
The director told her to stand and stare at him wide eyed for a full minute while he worked on her lips? Must…
Yes, in this case it's definitely the way she was supposed to act, knowing the character and how the scene was written in the original novel. She's supposed to be frozen, puzzled, a little hesitant, raised to not show any enthusiasm as it would be shameful for a girl etc.
Did you watch it until the end? Now you probably feel differently about how they separated? If you read the novel…
Hi! There is a good quality fan made translation online. It’s on site called Fanatical, the translators are called Peanuts and Lidge. You can find it by googling. The adaptation is mostly very faithful. They added a lot of stuff to the drama but the important scenes are almost word to word so in the novel you can read what the characters were thinking and it helps understand them.
This was how she was written in the original novel and an important part of the story. When she came back from…
Hi! She does become gradually happier and brighter, and in the end she will be very happy, but she never becomes as bold and carefree as when she was young - of course that's the way it goes for most of us in the real life too. But I understand your urge to skip, there is still maybe a couple of eps about the past until the main plot starts really moving.
A nice, short, well-paced drama for a rainy day. It's low budget and not always realistic, but if you go in with moderate expectations you might enjoy it as much as I did.
