Yes Zhu yin’s depression was due to the fact that she was not there for him at his worst time and did not understand what was going on to step up to help him. The parents played a huge role in that. There is something I noticed the second time I watched the show- ZY is very cold and detached towards her parents in the present day episodes. She does not even acknowledge her mom’s so callled kindnesss and even that closeness with her dad is gone

The only person you can compare to and challenge is yourself and how you can get better - you should never focus on others and their life or their intelligence. That was GAO’s fault he always wanted LX to acknowledge him but he never did anything great to show that he deserved it. Even when he wanted go abroad he had to rely on that one competition that he won because of LX. Why would you have your entire future tied up to another person?

Female’s character was great from the beginning- she kind of complements him in what he lacks and also is a nice foil to his antisocial character . You also remember they were only 18 in the college parts . Still kids or rather not yet fully an adult. In her case she was brought up by overbearing parents and has never had the opportunity to be herself and think and act for herself.
