This drama from the get go was simply riveting! The story line is different and I'm still wrapping my head around the various nuances even after finishing the drama a couple of days ago. My only complaint is that the ending felt unfinished and abrupt. I can only wonder if those cut scenes would have made for a more complete feel especially with several of the supporting casts who seemed to have disappeared/been forgotten towards the end and their story left incomplete. Despite that, this will be one drama I can see myself revisiting over and over again for some time to come.
Nonetheless, I most say that I simply love the Luo Yun Xi and Bai Lu pairing! 😍 Honestly feel that they were 1/3 of what made this drama so enjoyable. They have such an amazing chemistry and dynamic that mesmerizes viewers. Their performance felt organic and believable that you were able to connect to the characters and their joy, pain, sadness at any given moment. I look forward to viewing more projects with them together in the future.
This drama could have been much shorter. There was no need for 38 episodes. It just became a drag before I had even reached episode 20. There were too many face palm (implausible) moments or what I would say were down right stupid and also contrary moments. Wish I could say I enjoyed this.
Li Dai Kun has utterly and completely captivated me in this drama. 🤭
This drama has no shortage of handsome males, but the way I couldn't take my eyes off Li Dai Kun's character whenever he appeared on screen says a lot about his pull.
I need more of him in costume dramas but this time as the main male lead.
At this point, (finished episode 36), the only character I care the most about is Tian Zhixie. So you know I am hurt by what happened. He has a grasp on my heart and I believe he was the only real competition to Luo Yinfan where Chong Zi is concerned.
Those who read the novel does it mention anything about what Chong Zi actually feels towards Tian Zhixie? It's obvious in the drama that she has some kind of feelings towards him even if it is not at the level of what she feels for Luo Yinfan.
Only on episode 4 and I had to pause to say I don't think I have ever watched a drama that had so many attractive males all in the same drama. I feel like I am getting a sugar rush from all the eye-candy. 🤭
From the poor inconsistent writing, to the plot contradictions this drama certainly had it's flaws. I could have looked past a lot of them, but the fact that in 2023 still have to deal with toxic colorist mindset being so blatantly displayed is a big NO for me.
They are not really my thing, too. And, like you, I gave this a chance because of CXX. Thus far, I have started…
I haven't watched any other Republican era drama since. Maybe Thousand Years For You which I consider quasi Republican era as it has more fantasy elements to it.
The 8.6 rating for this drama is so disrespectful. Definitely should be 9.
Not a drama without flaws but certainly a well made drama. I laughed, I cried, I raged and was on the edge of my seat a few times and it was all worth it. The ending is poignant and impactful. Some loose ends that weren't properly tied up or downright forgotten, but doesn't affect the overall story line.
The actors were brilliant in their respective roles and you felt every emotion and tense moments.
The rating for this drama should be an 8 at least. The actors all did a great job portraying their characters and drawing you into the story. Nonetheless it can't be denied that there are some plot holes due from possibly missing scenes. Other than that this would have definitely been a very good drama.
The drama is not bad, however, it could definitely be better. What it suffers from is poor execution because the plot itself is interesting, but the story was not properly executed. I don't know if this is due to the script, the directing or both. The main leads did a fine job portraying their characters nonetheless. I sincerely hope that Zhang Bin Bin gets to lead in a drama of high quality done very well instead of all these subpar dramas. I enjoy watching him on screen, but he needs a good drama that would do him justice.
Chef kiss to this drama. A very satisfactory ending. Loved how part 2 continued seamlessly from part 1 without missing a beat. 🥰 This just might be my favorite K-drama. Definitely in my top 3. The ending even makes sense! And I simply adore Jang Uk and Naksu/Jin Bu Yeon/ Cho Yeong. 🤗 My second most favorite pairing in the drama would be Park Jin and Maidservant Kim they are too cute! Won't be mad at all if we got a Part 3 of AoS, however, I am very okay with what we got.
Keep watching, you'll be rewarded :) Tao Jun Hui was not abandoned, but it's his own acting.
TJH definitely did say something when his mother started talking about QS while she over at the house. He didn't stay entirely mute. I would say his issue is that he is "too much" of an obedient son, so he didn't go far as to disrespect his mother or create conflict. Yes, QS is very prideful, which is why she ran out of the house during this and completely cut TJH off from then on. When TJH was searching for her she was hiding and from what it seemed, she didn't take his calls afterwards.
The only time we are shown TJH was just listening to his mother talking about QS without saying anything was after they were no longer together and he was with WF. But to say that TJH let his mother humiliate QS while they were still together is a definite stretch. QS was willing to easily give up on her relationship of over 7 years without making any efforts at communication and TJH gave way after his efforts were rejected. That's just what it is. And it's what we were shown. Not sure what there is to disagree about.

Finished watching, don't agree. Didn't feel there was any reward other than a general relief that it was finally over.
My feelings still hold about TJH being abandoned essentially by QS. I'm just glad though that TJH eventually got over making those lost sad puppy eyes whenever QS was around. It was evident that he had loved her deeply (I mean a 7 years long relationship is no chomp change), however, QS was the one who easily gave up on their relationship (my opinion) and there was nothing to prove otherwise. Yes, TJH's mother did not have the best of opinions about QS. However, if QS had really loved TJH and wanted to be with him, that would not have stopped her, especially given her stubborn personality and how she will go after what she wants until she attains it. Nonetheless, it was good to see that QS was considerate of TJH as a colleague and as a person. She genuinely wanted him to progress in his career and find happiness. Their partnership in the legal field would definitely be interesting.
By the time the drama ended, for me, it could have been either YH or TJH for QS. Both men, are thoughtful, kind and considerate individuals, but I can see how YH can have a slight edge. Overall, an entertaining enough drama to pass the time.

He completely captivated in Journey of Chong Zi.
