I want to congratulate myself for getting through this drama. It was initially interesting enough to keep me entertained but I definitely started to feel the length of the drama less than midway through it. The story lines just were not that engaging enough and there were scenes that did not make any sense or add anything to the overall story. You can tell instances where scenes were cut because the transitions didn't make sense. If nothing else, this was something to watch to help pass the time as I'm in a drama slump at the moment.
I'm only 12 episodes in and feeling the length of this drama, which is not a good sign as I've easily watched much longer dramas at 50+ episodes. I don't know what it is that is failing to grab me.
Also, it doesn't help that I'm starting to feel really bad for Tao Jun Hui given the little glimpse we've been shown of the past. So far, it looks like he was the loyal one that got abandoned, wonder how the story will unfold as the episodes unfold. Going to make myself see this through as I wait for other dramas to finish up and premiere as well. 😩
Wait a minute. Ning Yi and Feng Zhiwei by the same actors???! Please don't let this be fake, because my heart can't take it right now being that I only just finished watching The Rise of Phoenixes and would love to believe that this is a continuation of their story. 😩
THIS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS... The universe of Zhi Wei & FuYao (NiNi and YangMi) - the reason why the title was…
Oh wow. Thanks for sharing this tidbit. That is very odd something so significant was not mentioned in the drama at all. I wondered about the title and couldn't wrap my head around why it is called The Rise of Phoenixes. Now it makes a bit more sense.
I have a question - when did Prince Helian realize that Zhi Wei and Wei Zhi were the same person? Because as far…
Prince Helian saw her as Zhi Wei first, and was already intrigued by her, then when he saw Wei Zhi, that's when it became obvious they were the same person. Because when Wei Zhi was talking to Ning Yi after the court session after the whole debacle with everyone having the mark on their skin from the tea, I believe Prince Helian had come up to Ning Yi and started asking about Zhi Wei, while he watching Wei Zhi's reaction. That's when he knew for sure Wei Zhi was actually Zhi Wei.
A must watch for those who appreciate intelligent male and female leads that are their best when working together yet are able to stand alone. I don't have much words to describe how I feel about this drama. I will say that this drama is not for those who prefer insipid storylines that are childish with meaningless fluff.
Also, outside of the plot, one of the best things about this drama is the acting and chemistry between the main leads which is further helped by their supporting characters.
Chen Kun has become a personal favorite of mine. What a handsome, amazing and mesmerizing actor! 😍 My goodness, that man can act. He has spoiled me moving forward on how a strong, layered, driven and thoughtful male lead should be. He exuded his character of Ning Yi. You felt his every emotion both expressed and hidden. Absolutely phenomenal. I need to see him in more future projects. And Ni Ni completely sold me as Feng Zhiwei. While I would have preferred that the drama stuck to the novel ending, I can reluctantly live with the drama ending. However, if the director ever decides to spoil us with an epilogue or three, I won't be mad at all.
The best thing about this drama is the OST, which managed to convey what the drama itself failed to do. Unfortunately, the drama felt flat and the chemistry between the lead pair was severely lacking, From the plot and OST, I expected to experience the poignancy and yearning of lovers separated and reunited only to face separation once more. However, watching this drama it was hard to be convinced of any great love between the main pair. Not sure of what to pinpoint as the reason for this letdown, however, having experienced Ren Jia Lun in One and Only and how he perfectly conveyed the love, yearning and tenderness of his character for Cui Shi Yi, without having to say much and with little to no physical contact, I had high expectations for his character here which were not met. Disappointed, but loving the OST.
What a find! Republican Era dramas are not really my thing but I gave this a chance because of Chen Xing Yin whom I became a fan of from his work in Goodbye My Princess. And he did not disappoint!
This drama has a little bit of everything and it's refreshing to see a smart female lead who does not simper, is not obnoxious and knows how to handle her business. Tan Xuanlin and Mu Wan Qing are a good example of a balanced couple with good dynamics.
The second male lead is an absolute gem and I love how the drama captures that a guy can be the ideal one but not be the right one for you. The drama showcases this without putting down either of the male leads. Instead, there is respect and a sense of appreciation for the other between them that is endearing to see. This drama tells an interesting and captivating story and it definitely had me cry real tears at certain points. It's been a while since a drama did that. Worth the watch.
not u generalizing all c-drama over a show that got the worst douban rating in china history
What's funny, Not, is your entire commentary. You made how many posts in response to my one to say what exactly? Were you attempting to defend the problematic issue that was clearly stated about the show and that I mentioned I have noticed with other C-Dramas as well? Not to mention your lack of reading comprehension: "a lot" Does Not equal to "all". So in addition, you made a false assertion about my comment. But you tried it with your asinine remarks. And it's interesting and telling your quick analogy with black and gangster.
Nothing more disgusting to me than the attempts to try to undermine, trivialize and dismiss a serious issue. And yes "sickly pale", because that is what gets promoted especially with the white powder that is put on many of the actors faces that is very obvious and SHADES lighter than their own natural, healthier looking complexion. I am not even going to delve into that. But then again, you are aware about the colorism that exists and how fairer complexion is idolized. I humored you by responding, because I refuse to even debate about a very blatant issue, but acting intentionally obtuse and trying to strawman is a big NO. The fact you attempted to argue the points brought up is a problem in and of itself. Check yourself on that.
Something about this drama was just off for me. Can't put it into words other than to say it was hard connecting to the lead characters. Also, I found the chemistry between the main couple flat. It was lacking for me. I don't know if it's a director issue or acting issue by the actors. I did appreciate however, the character concept of the female lead being smart, decisive, brave, resourceful as well as considerate.
Watching this, it is clear that this is not meant to be a romantic drama. Still not done yet, but I saw some spoilers about the ending when the drama was airing. I was curious about how the drama ending compared to the novel ending, so I searched around and saw that Fang Jianming aka Fang Zhu had actually gotten castrated in the novel!! 😳 Now I just want to know if he was already castrated when he took on Haishi as his disciple or did he make that decision later on? Because if it was before, that means a relationship between him and Haishi was never a possible...
Also, Haishi in the novel really became the emperor's woman in every sense of the word and they had a child??! 😲 Those that read the novel, please I need details as to what actually went down in the novel because I'm mind blown by these revelations. The drama seems to be very very VERY sanitized compared to the novel.
Question for those that can read Chinese, what was written on the floating lantern Yan Dan and Ying Yuan set sail to in the first special episode? Wish that had been translated.
I really wish that some people on here understood that a bad ending and a sad ending are not the same thing.
Yes, an ending can be sad and bad at the same time if it made no sense within the context of the story. Similary, an ending can be "happy" and be bad also if it makes no sense within the story.
While, I am glad that there are an additional surprise 2 episodes remaining for Immoral Samsara, the ending we got was a poignant and sad one which made sense given the pre-established characteristics of the characters. It was NOT a bad ending. Just a sad one.
It made sense that Ying Yuan would sacrifice himself for the three realms. Like HELLO! If you have been paying attention, this has been established from the very beginning that what he cares about the most is the safety of the three realms which he sees as his duty. As for Yan Dan, this is a woman, that has shown she will willingly give up her life for love than to act like she wasn't in love when she jumped of the bridge. So that she will sacrifice herself when the one she loved was now gone, and basically just about everything that was dear to her was gone? Also makes sense.
Not everything in life is syrupy and sweet, and this was a bittersweet ending that we got in episode 59 aka 21, that stayed true to the characters. While I strongly wished that Yan Dan and Ying Yuan got their happily ever after which they have more than earned, they died doing what they most desired: for Ying Yuan that was protecting the three realms and his loved one, and for Yan Dan living & dying for her most loved one, whom she has literally sacrificed almost her entire being for more than once.
Whoever thought cultivating that lamp into human form was a good idea should go through 80 heavenly strikes, 100…
Oh my goodness! This comment sent me! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 But I fully understand because my goodness that character is beyond aggravating and obnoxious. Just won't go away. Plot armor is thick for that one.
RQ is the heavenly emperor’s older sister. Cheng Yi calls the heavenly emperor YY’s 舅舅 in an interview.…
Thank you for providing that info. I can only wonder on how much detail/info we international viewers miss out on because dialogues are not fully translated to convey certain nuances that a native speaker or someone who understands the language would grasp. While I speak no type of mandarin I was able to tell early on that the English sub was not fully capturing what was being said in certain parts of the drama. I didn't expect though that such an important detail like what you shared would not have been conveyed. 😩
