YES! Fairy tale heroic is such a perfect description ! I really love the costumes too! Too bad we don't get any…
Oh whats hindering you to buy or make a drama costume, isn't that just.. cosplay~?
ellietheelai Feb 21, 2022
"While modern male protagonists aren't completely useless, they tend to be CEOs. They essentially sit and order people around."
That phrase made me giggle, so TRUE! I'd rather prefer a male protagonist with another job, be it a doctor, a cop, a pro-gamer or tomb raider! At least they get shown to to things.

Also in historic dramas...everyone just look more.. fairy tale heroic XD. Men with swords, women with swords, everyone dressed in swooshy clothes, often gorgeous silks and embroidery and fur and gold crowns and what not. Most of the historic main characters costumes have way better quality fabrics than a modern drama protagonist.. I mean, when do most people nowadays wear a flowy silk dress with embroidery and everything- at their wedding. So at least for a costume nerd it gives me extra romance flavour.

I'm rewatching, being at 33 right now.
It's rather rewatchable, mostly because you have a lot of sassy characters.. like everyone from Lize palace (oh I love them all), snakey-boy, and the Wutongs actor who is so good at being disgusting. I like Xuanji much better now the 2nd time around, after seeing Crystal in other roles, she can not just play the cutesy dummy.
The hardest part is again for me the trauma of LingLong.
Noticable is also that a lot of plot points pop out of thin air, not really something that has been developing, but just random difficlties to, esoecially in the first 20episodes.
I am also counting how often Sifeng gets hurt/bleeds. It's absurd.
On The Autumn Ballad Feb 16, 2022
I am really bad at voices, but is this live sound recording instead of overdubbing? You hear the voice from different directions when the angles change, and there is a lot of background noises and everything.
Also, I love to see that all mains are not fresh out of school but actual adults. I know their roles are supposed to be at least 7 years younger, but the acting is just more well rounded with experienced people.
And I love to see a ML that I can fawn over thats actually older than me, lol. Sometimes you feel like a cradle robber if you find out, that pretty boy is like, what 19.

If thats not one of the worst descriptions for a drama I've ever seen.

A little about my experience...I don't usually check descriptions and tags when watching dramas... But for some…
I suppose bullying was put in the tags not just because when it happened to Kiyoi, but Hira said it happened to him since forever. I had to look up the exact deifinition since english is not my mother language and it says "Bullying is the activity of repeated, aggressive behavior intended to hurt another individual, physically, mentally, or emotionally.". So Kiyoi gets mobbed physically and Hira more psychologically, but it's bullying either way.
Soo.. if this was a fanfiction I'd put bullying in the tags as well, but not flag it as violent or the main genre (thats still romance).
But yeah, one has to consider that there are levels of severness especially to easyly triggering tags, before deciding not not watch it at all.

Same. I have watched a lot of japanese BLs over the years and i think this drama is the best japanese BL made…
Yes, I totally agree and have also watched many japanese BL ever since the cringy days of the Takumi-kun films that got subbed. This one stood out also, because not having a manga as a foundation, it was not necessary to have the "let's recreate that scene in that pose like in the manga" stiffly posed, but rather unatural situations (which totally work in more comedy style dramas, don't get me wrong). But it's also not a super tragic coming of age gay movie. It hits a sweet spot between slice of life and romance.
I emphasize a lot with Hira and think he's actually rather brave to 1: realize he's actually liking Kiyoi quite early in the story and 2: even telling him!!! Both things are not as easy to come by for a person with low self esteem.
I was so happy they changed perspective in ep 5 than, what a gift.
Yep, and than I emphasized with Kiyoi too, I have done the "come here *kiss* and running away scene" myself before. Including the standing in lonely space afterwards, killing yourself for the boldness and waiting DESPERATELY for that stupid guy to come after me. And him not coming. Uhh.
For a shallow viewer he's a tsundere character, but I think that cookie cutter trope is way to simple and easy.
I you put together two lonely characters with different flavours of low self esteem, its a feat to make them a couple.
On My Beautiful Man Feb 11, 2022
Just finished all episodes in a binge... and this show hit me like a train. I'm actually shaking. I cried through this ever since the end of ep 4 where Hira pulled the blanket up on Kiyois photo.
The rewatch value of this is like 2000, and Koyama is MVP.
Oh well, still shaking.

The only thing I did not like was the weird amount of bullying that happened right in front of the teachers, also so in my old school you'd be suspended if you slushied someone, wtf.

I had no idea this is harem! I hate harem, i thought he is going to pick one. Thank you, I'm dropping this.
No it's no really a harem, I don't like those either, he just has a number of beautiful female servants, because he needs to play the role of a playboy to discourage the court from marrying him to their princess. All his female servants get actual fleshed out characterisation, but there is only that has romantic chemistry with him. He has a bunch of old men fighting and for him as well, just like a few handsome younger ones that get the same treatment, soo..
To be fair I am not yet done with the show, but if they wanted to do a harem, it would be done so at episode 24 now~

And here I am thinking I can't enjoy high school dramas anymore. What really sold me were the reactions of Aida and Kosukes volleyball friends and star player Hashimoto-san! The congratulation board omggg. I also liked Ida casually inviting the awful student teacher for ramen, I was convinced he'd scream and him and he'd give him s***.. but gave him noodles instead. Yes. Convincing works better than confronting.
Favourite scenes including Aoki stepping in a garbage bag, rolling himself in curtains and the way he pulled his hoodie completely shut. Mametaros judging doggie face also kills.

Iqiyi has financial problems, they had to let go of a lot of people working for them and there are rumors that the amount of new dramas that are going to be green lit is will go quite a bit (in other platforms, too). One of the reasons is the audience going to short video platforms like douyin/tictoc but also the ban on BL and Idol selection shows and of course corona virus did not help too. (source: youtube channels Avenue and Marcushere and similar channels)

Could I ask how work the long half wig or extensions? How are they attached? I found out about them thanks to…
There is a youtube channel called Youly Beauty that has an endless amount of tutorials on how to to these chinese hair styles. However I know that most extensions are either braided in, attached with combs/clips/rubber bands and camouflaged with real hair or for a longer lasting style they are sown into your hair or glued.
I am not sure about half wigs, but the simpler ones should be like a full wig without bangs, that start where you'd wear a headband and are stuck on with combs and an enourmous amount of bobby pins. There are even headbands with half wigs and you can find many good english tutorials about these on youtube, because it's a popular hairstyle for black women.
If you want a half wig with a ponytail and the nape of the neck is showing, these are usually glued on with mastix or similar skin glues (removable with alkohol) to make them look real.
Take everything with a grain of salt, I'm just a cosplayer ^^.
Badass Bunny Jan 15, 2022
This made me giggle.. another long hair fan here! I love it that in longer chinese dramas the guys also have hairstyles changes, from open to top knot or the other way around- normally you only see the women in any kind of historical show (even european ones) change their hair to buns or "grown up styles" when they get married. And sometimes, but only sometimes we get a glorious open hair scene at night (without the character being imprisoned), like A'Li in Men with sword...
Every time I see a BTS and the hordes of stylists run after the actors and comb their locks, thats so funny and reminds me of Legolas memes back in the days.
My current favourite hairstyle is Wu Lei in The Long Ballad, butt long wavy brown hair AND braids, yesss.
And braids in general, all the more or less nomadic characters and their intricate braids, nice. Also more practical than open hair when fighting.
Another favourite is if they use an actors real bangs and than a long half wig or extensions (like Zhang Zehan in Word in Honor), no annoying fake hairline or even worse, glue-line. Thats what they do with most female characters as well and I like the more natural and soft look it gives. The wig netting they put over girls elaborate giant hairbuns is a bit off-putting though, I watch dramas in HD on a TV and as a cosplayer you see that stuff.
And as you noticed, all the korean bodyguards characters and their high ponytails also give me more eye candy than the top knot guys (especially if they wear that netted forehead band, well less work for the hair team at least).

Title The Long Ballad Spoiler
the grassland arc with the ashile tribe was definitely the pinnacle point of the drama for me. i personally feel…
Yes, the change of place really mirrored the change of mind and development of character- and made Chang' ges and A'Suns only really bad conflict (his moms death and her role in it) even worse and more heart breaking. And they had a load of episodes there, which I enjoyed, good world building. Another actually free Ashile female character would have been nice though, we only saw slaves, the Khatun and her servants and Chang'ge but dressed as a guy.

Aww, Dilraba as interpreter, thats really nice! I should give her dramas more of a try, I liked her in Eternal Love and The long Ballad (but could not finish even ep 1 of Eternal Love of Dream)- any recs?

Oh and if you say you like adventure like Indiana Jones.. DaoMuBiJi IS also nicknamed chinese Indiana Jones (with bromance) and here is an excellent article https://kisskh.at/article/yw-done-devitto-done-watching-ultimate-note-as-a-stand-alone-drama if you are in the mood for something new.

Ah so Wu Lei was the main in Tomb of the Sea, Liu Yuning a main in Ultimate Note and Kudousi Jiang Ainiwaeris a supporting character in Tomb Of the Sea an Reunion 1&2. Also highly recommending Ultimate Note as a start drama in the franchise if one is in a mood for a classic adventure rabbit hole to fall into. Liu Yuning is also hilarious in this one.

I liked this series a lot. But I`m a little disappointed on how they dealt with the disability issue.... I mean,…
Yes, totally agree. I mean it was a plot thing to have Chu Ge train him while he helps her study, but there are levels of wheelchair use.. I am not sure if it's realistic that he can do without it and even without crutches in the end. Many people use a wheelchair for going out of the house because longer walking exhausts them or hurts too much, but they can get around at home or in restaurant just fine or have a cane for support. But no, he had to be "healed", meh.
Still the best e-sports show I've seen so far, and one of the dramas with a high rewatch value imho.

Ah sure, I've seen the awards and everything and downloaded most of A'Suns grassland dress pictures if the cosplay bug bites me (if that happens to me, the costume has to be exeptional, lol) .. They put their money into the most important parts: script, actors and music (a great song makes a ordinary scene fantastic, while a boring song makes even the best shot scenes quite meh).

One of my favourite things were also the military strategies, like throwing spiked hay or the empty forts or the vanishing army. I suspect these things and also the good pacing were because the original material is a serialized manhua and you can see it in all the story ups and downs and the "arc" structure.

Oh and the sheer amount of DaoMuBiJi (Graverobbers chronicles) actors.
