She suffers from schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder, and I assume she's been living with these conditions for years. This isn't something that can simply be fixed by the "power of love."
Facing the truth and having Mo Xiu Yao's support will certainly help ease her pain and allow her to regain some stability. However, I can't see Ye Li making a full recovery when her mind has already been so deeply affected and she's no longer fully in control of her own psyche.
When it comes to a physical injury, it's easier to accept that an extraordinary doctor might find a near-miraculous cure. But with severe mental illnesses like these, even the best doctor can't perform miracles.
I hope this storyline has a realistic, or at least satisfying, conclusion. It's also quite unusual to see a female lead portrayed with such serious mental illnesses. It reminds me of that Jet Li movie where his character loses his sanity after being betrayed. Even after getting his revenge and finding a measure of peace, he never fully regains his mind.
I know this is ultimately a story about romance and mutual healing, but since they've chosen to tackle such a serious subject, I hope they'll do it justice and keep the character's development consistent instead of relying on a miraculous recovery.
Without taking into account Ye Li’s mental issues and things she is not even aware of herself, I find it hard to understand why she consciously hides so many things from A’Yao. She only revealed the truth about her family to Mo Xiu Yao because he caught her in the act; at that moment, she was trying to reassure him. She did everything she could to earn Mo Xiu Yao’s trust, to make him open up and share his true feelings and thoughts, while she herself continues to wear a mask at all times.
From her thoughts and her version of events, what she feels seems closer to guilt and a debt she believes she must repay. Even though she has developed feelings for him, she is still not completely honest about what she truly thinks. She even lies while looking him straight in the eyes, with a smile, which is quite disturbing.
It feels as if, because of everything she believes she owes A’Yao, she forces herself to love him in order to compensate, while trying not to fully engage her emotions. Mo Xiu Yao, on the other hand, loves Ye Li unconditionally and accepts being hurt, while also being able to quickly calm his anger when he discovers the things she hides from him.
For now, because of her past and her sense of obligation, Ye Li’s emotions remain confused. Perhaps after Mo Xiu Yao learns the full truth, his mental state becomes a bit more stable, and they have important conversations about their past and what they represent to each other, Ye Li will appear less distant and will be able to set aside her guilt and embrace her true feelings.
He literally cut off his own leg and arm just to crawl to her… The way he kissed her hand 😭 Their acting in that scene was incredible. JZ and CDL did such an amazing job. They have to get a happy ending 🤧.
Now I understand why some comments mention a bittersweet ending 😂😅. This director really loves dark, shadow-heavy scenes with a mysterious, almost gothic atmosphere. The artistic direction is particularly elegant, especially when it comes to the costumes.
Fangs of Fortune, My Journey to You, and Veil of Shadows have a really similar aesthetic. Could it be the same director? Because I really feel like the vibe is the same. Also, the cast of these three dramas is on another level visually🤌.
I also watched both versions, but my biggest issue is that the iQIYI subtitles really aren’t great. I had already noticed it, but it’s quite frustrating because they’re often inaccurate. The first half was truly amazing, while the second half was a bit less engaging. Still, I got my happy ending and some really beautiful couple moments, so I’m satisfied. I’m also glad that the popularity of the two lead actors has skyrocketed we’ll definitely get to see them in more high-quality projects.
