You learnt Mandarin just from watching drama?😯
Ummm that’s a loaded question as to whether it’s a dialect or language. Hoping to not offend anyone I’ll say yes it’s definitely different.

My husband isnt Chinese so he just watches with me and reads subtitles. I explain to him that my brain goes 600000 faster than his because I first hear it and then read it and retranslate. 1. Read in English. 2. Hear it in Mandarin. 3. Convert it to Cantonese 4. Convert it to my native Chinese dialect 5. Process it back in English.

Subtitles are an injustice to the native language bc there’s so much lost in translation or simplifieD in English. Sometimes I laugh at a scene when the English translation doesn’t make it funny. I have the same experience when watching stuff in Spanish. It’s hard to translate idioms 😜

Mandarin is the recognized official language of China. Cantonese is a large regional dialect of Southern China. I speak an even smaller dialect within Southern China. Some people compare it to British vs American English but I think it’s more different than that. You have a lot more overlap and less issue understanding the two types of English. I think it’s comparable to Spanish in Mexico where the language is very different depending where you’re located. The difference is how you use tones/accents.

When people say they speak Chinese it can mean they speak one of the million dialects available. I say i speak Chinese but it’s a regional dialect so everyone from China can say they speak it but the spoken language can vary WRITTEN Chinese is uniform. No matter if it’s Cantonese , Mandarin or a dialect , the characters are written the same way , just pronounced differently.

Yes definite head start. I can speak Kindergarten level Chinese dialect which led to watching Cantonese dramas from age 12-18 and then Mandarin dramas I only started last October…now it’s almost been a year and I’m so proud of myself for such growth šŸ˜©šŸ˜‚

More or less but I cheated. I learned Cantonese from watching dramas when I was younger so there’s slight overlap in the languages. But I’m also Chinese…just a terrible daughter of Chinese immigrants who failed at learning the language 😭.

Title The Way We Were Spoiler
This was terrible. Really terrible. I’m embarrassed for everyone who signed on for this. I came for Tiffany and Luo Jin but their romance development was 0% believable. I’m pretty sure that if they had the choice, they would throw acid on this series so it never exists again.

They portrayed the 2ML as a STALKER. Not only is he a stalker but he STILL gets the girl. I couldn’t believe it. This is NOT ACCEPTABLE to show even in a fictional drama. Nothing about anything he did was normal nor could you rationalize it as ā€œoh but he loved herā€. No. It was unacceptable.

They stereotype of black people committing a crime is another mark against this series. I’m disgusted that we are still propagating these horrible stereotypes.

I love the main leads and went on a watching spree of their other shows after watching Princess Weiyoung but this was worse than a flop. Perhaps they needed money desperately and picked up this series but this was SO POORLY WRITTEN. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE WRITING AND DIRECTING. 😣 0 stars.

I made it til ep 12. Are they only dropping one episode a day??? I can’t make it through if it’s only one a day 😭. I loved how flustered she got playing her game to catch ZY and trying to be the flirty one. Now YMR doesn’t know what to do with her awkward self.

I wish every episode could have these scene snippets that show the background of someone’s back story or action.

I’m so smitten with Esther and VZ’s awkwardly developing relationship.

Im still at episode 3. He still doesnt remember or knows about her? And her doctorate?
Supposedly doesn’t know who she was or about the doctorate yet and I’m on ep 12. I think he’s realizing she’s not as ditzy as she plays off to be esp in this arc where they are in her village

Can anyone explain to me who the b*tch is? and what her deal is with Yu Mei Ren? Is it just jealousy?
I think they were HS rivals from the same town. And then they became rivals as adults bc she’s trying to take YMR’s job as a new social media influencer.

Why is Esther Yu so white? Her skin is very beautiful and I don't mean it's not beautiful if it's not white.
Different people, different skin tones

OMG I binged this all in 24 hours and watched eps 6-10 without subs. My mandarin is sub par but I got the gist of it and I was so smitten with them! This is a light romance and I barely watch any modern shows so the premise is new to me. This is probably the second modern show I’ve seen as I’m usually partial to xianxia and wuxia.

I haven’t seen Vin Zhang since TMOPB bc I couldn’t get past his role there and wasn’t interested in his other roles to date. I came here for Esther post LBFAD and now I’m a VZ fan! I love their cute interactions and VZ slowly coming out of his shell.

Sorry SML/SFL but I’ve fast forwarded past that plot bc I’m stuck on the mains! If you’re on the fence, watch it!

I came here after LBFAD because I’m aimlessly wandering around now.

This was actually a good, chill show to watch while watching for ā€œbigger ticketā€ shows to air. The group dynamics were super strong and sweet. I love how they always gathered for meals. The dedication and loyalty to the group was really genuine and sweet despite the misconceptions and hiding of identities.

The ability of the ML and FL to be together seemed unrealistic based on how men/women were treated at that time but I totally ignored this, lol. The class gap was too wide and lying to the emperor would have never met with such ease in consequences.

I found it really interesting that they ā€œtorturedā€ the FL too. This usually isn’t done to the level shown here and it’s weird but I appreciated that she got equal treatment and they didn’t spare her the torture which leant more emotional draw into the drama.

Pretty healthy relationship between ML and FL and I like how the cases were quickly wrapped up when the 4/5 Musketeers got together 😜

Definitely worth the watch. The kisses were better than the usual ā€œtouchmyliponlyā€ kisses of usual dramas.

Definitely recommend if you’re between series and don’t want to be too emotionally drained! ā¤ļø
