The toxic top trope in older CBLs comes from the time where the original novels were written in. Back then, the stereotypical dynamic of a weak crying uke and a possessive/red-flag seme was extremely popular, and many of these novels are almost 20 years old, so they reflect the trends of that era. Audience expectations have changed a lot since then, which is why newer BLs, especially Thai ones, often go for green/yellow flag and healthier dynamics.
