This is definitely one of my favorite BLs. I was afraid they were going to go the tragic, but meaningful route where Day ended up with Mhok's eyes. So glad it ended on a high note. The one thing I was hoping for was Day taking responsibility for the accident. Night was inebriated in the back seat, Day was the sober one driving. The accident was his fault because he didn't keep his eyes on the road. If he couldn't pull over, he should have just accepted that there would be vomit in the backseat, not search for a bag while driving. It was a good device for character development that he first blamed Night, then forgave him, but he should have realized that he was at fault and apologized to Night to bring it full circle.
This started out charming, lost some of its magic in the middle, but I still thought the writing was above average. I was expecting a clever and meaningful conclusion in the last episode, but it was pretty awful. It seems like the writer had an ending in mind, but could not think of a plausible way for it to come about, so just stuck it in there. The whole last episode was completely unsatisfying and the more I think about it, the more annoyed I become.
I'm enjoying the light, fluffy charm of this drama. But what is with the jarring editing at the end of episode…
That kiss just came out of nowhere, got tacked onto the end of the episode, and it was chaste to the point of being uncomfortable. I just imagined Off and Gun having to stand there perfectly still with their lips pressed together waiting for the director to yell Cut. It took me out of the story completely.
I really wanted to like this drama, but the writers are making it so hard. Hyo Shim and her entire family are so unlikable, I hope they end up alone and unhappy at this point. How can we go 23 episodes with no character development? I get that Hyo Shim was raised to be an enabler with no free will of her own, but she's not a child anymore. How is she setting boundaries with one man and then immediately ignoring them, and not setting boundaries with another man and dumbly following him around for an entire day when she's supposed to be at a workshop for her job? I would blame Tae Min for trying to force things, but Hyo Shim is not rejecting him clearly. I don't even know why these men like her. I don't know how Tae Ho's attitude did such a 180 in the first place. It seemed really unwarranted and jarring.
The only characters I like are Tae Hee, who is actually working to build her own life, and Phillip who is at the mercy of his insane family. All the rest of the characters are selfish, evil or annoying and just not interesting enough for me to even write all the details of why I can't stand them.
And why is the loan shark entitled to the car if the debt was paid? There's no reason for him to be going after the idiot brother. It was just a contrived plot point to drive him back to Tae Hee, who deserves better.
The only reason I'm going to watch the next episode is because I'd like to see how evil Tae Min's mother can be. That might be entertaining.
I really enjoyed this drama. It had its flaws, but the writing was better than average, the characters were lovable and the acting was outstanding. The end felt a bit rushed and I'm just wondering what happened to Yoon Cheong Ah's biological mother. Did they address her in a fleeting comment and I missed it?
The writing feels abbreviated, leaving me knowing what is going on, but having no emotional attachment to it.
Because the writers didn't establish any bond or history between Shin and Guy - they were just portrayed as distant co-workers - so both of their emotional responses to Guy leaving seemed out of place. The backstory of Guy feeling like second place was not established, just told to us in one scene, thus making no impact. Without having any sense of his history, Guy suddenly leaving the way he did seemed totally out of character and I didn't feel anything about it.
The relationship between Shin and Oab is little better. A bit of backstory would go a long way. It seems like Oab may have feelings for Shin, but it's hard to tell and I don't really care.
Shin and Peach do have some chemistry, but everything feels contrived. It's like the writers wrote the BL trope scenes and then strung just enough story in between them to call it a drama. How great of a baker is Shin if Peach can make his signature cake better than he can on the second try? I love kitchen/food dramas and this one doesn't contain any of that genre's charm. I wish there could be character development and bonding through the teaching and learning process.
I realize that this is a short drama, but the episodes are full length and there is a lot the writers could have done to bring a fully fleshed out story to life. Instead I feel like I'm watching a summary where I'm being told, this character feels this way because of this, and that one feels that way because of that, now watch the boys kiss.
I actually enjoyed the series until the last few episodes. I just had to accept the fact that all the characters were caricatures and that the overacting was part of that. The writing wasn't great at times, but there were hints here and there that made me anticipate some clever redemption and resolution in the end. But then it seemed like the writers said, "This is too much work, let's just wrap it up without using our brains at all!" So the end came with virtually no pay off and not much satisfaction.
I thought the leads were great together and I enjoyed the side characters. The pacing felt off, though. It kind of dragged while they figured things out in what felt like a repetitive push and pull, and then it went from 0 to 100 rushing through everything in the last episode. It didn't feel very satisfying. The last scene was good, but we didn't really arrive at it. We're just kind of told, "and then this happened". The end.
At this point, it feels like this was written by high schoolers. There is a story there, but it's presented in a dull way. It feels like the director is not very experienced with thrillers. And the writer is just not experienced, period. I can see this being made by high schoolers, in which case I would say, good job for that level of skill. Well, just one short episode left that I'll be watching at 1.25x. Might as well see how they wrap it up. Hopefully there's a clever twist in there somewhere.
I love Ja and First together, but why, why can't they ever get a good script?? This drama started off okay and proceeded along in mediocre fashion, but the actors did the best they could with what they had. And honestly, I was enjoying it much more than Remember Me. But then the last two episodes were a load of contrived nonsense. They should have just ended it at episode 10.
How is this series going? Lots of romance? Very scary? Anyone who can give me an update? Is it worth watching?…
It's not really scary. I'm not on the edge of my seat or anything, just curious about what's going on and hoping that the writing is good when it all comes together. I've watched 7 episodes and romance has not happened yet. Well, what did happen, I wouldn't call romance. I think in thrillers, the romance comes at the end a lot of the time. It's entertaining, but pretty mild as far as thrillers go.
Of course there was no kiss. And I prefer it that way because the leads had no chemistry whatsoever. For most of the drama, Kang San's mother in law has been struggling to make ends meet, but she's suddenly able to support him in opening his own restaurant and has been putting money aside every month? Interesting. I'm just glad this thing is over. They should have gone fully off the deep end and jumped two years ahead where every character (including SJ and Jenny) are gathered for Miracle's first birthday party in a mansion that president Dong bought for his sister and her husband. Everyone is magically good and supportive of each other and it's a big celebration.
The first 8 episodes were great. I thought it might be this year's A Business Proposal. But thereafter, things just got a bit dull. I can't quite put my finger on it. It had a great cast and chemistry, the story premise was good, the hotel and business idealism aspects were good, but I found myself bored with the second half and what I didn't watch at 1.5x speed, I watched at 2x. I put it on hold for a month before finishing the last two episodes and it was just... not very engaging. It had a strange rhythm where they set up a crescendo scene with a wide aperture shot, soft lighting, intensifying music, and then had the impactful moment - over and over again. Scenes like that are only highly gratifying if they are few and far between, so the drama started to feel one note. It's hard to explain. I can see where the series was good, I just didn't enjoy the second half very much.
Wow, I have to hand it to President Dong for doing a complete 180. It's like he's a completely different person. Just like Dong Jr. Instantaneous character development. A supernatural tag should be added because I think they were both possessed by kind spirits. After weeks of dragging along, when something has finally happened, it has to be wrapped up in one episode. I'm just dumbfounded by this writing.
I really enjoyed this drama. I guess coming back and watching an older drama after being disappointed with the inconsistent writing of current dramas made me appreciate the fact that they executed the plot without changing things midway and the characters remained true to themselves. It had the potential to feel a little draggy, but I solved that by watching at 1.5x speed and fast forwarding through flashbacks and crying. I could understand the villains, but they didn't try to force sympathy on the audience. Every time I thought I would start to lose interest due to Soon Shin's stupidity, something would happen to hook me into the next episode. I marathoned this in a few days and came away feeling satisfied.
