Commenting as a non-novel reader. I liked it and thought it was worth the wait. Is it the best of the year for…
As a novel adaptation, my personal view is this so far for this year drama, gave the most complete and satisfactory adaptation in one season. Although they change some plots and some characters, it all make sense for this drama. ZLH has another grey role in ‘Tiger and Crane’, but I dropped that because the storyline went way off. Totaly agreed with you on better shots for the kiss scenes. Some scenes, the director took 20 shots, and yet some kiss scenes still feel rather awkward esp. the cave scene, but I guessed it’s meant to be forceful and awkward.😅
I am waiting for Zhou Ye and TJC’s modern drama. But will check out Liu YuNing - A Journey To Love, his new historical drama airing today?
I guess this is pretty popular outside of China because iQiyi has a Cantonese dubbed version Coming Soon!!!
Interesting that IQIYI is really expanding its International market. I watched some Canto dubbed to Chinese, can be so funny. I wonder Chinese to Canto., will want to see how they do the classic BL stabbed XW’s scene.😅
For those who are unaware and missing this group of casts, do watch their variety show, “As you wish: story of Kunning palace”, already 5/6 episodes are out and the casts were hilariously funny in that show.
Very well written review. Thank you for writing down all the key crucial thoughts for this drama. For me, this is indeed a gem discovery, apart from the director’s sudden bright light, and occasional weird camera effects, all the actors done so well here and fit nicely in their roles. I felt sad that they have to kill off You Feng Ying. Overall such an enjoyable watch. So glad the censorship didn’t take off the steamy kisses, I think someone counted that there were 5 of those including the forehead kiss.;)
Yah! Just started watching ep4. Cui Shao Yang as commentator is really funny!😆
Hmmm…at the end of the water game, Wang Xing Yue was being playful and purposely pull ZLH into the pool. Then next moment you see protective BL immediately dragged WXY into the pool too🤣.
That was a totally unnecessary and ridiculous wasted death. I can’t even feel sad bc that was just so dumb.
Yeah, JXN trusted ZYZ too much. In the previous ep., I thought the script writing was smart to get XW console JXN and told her how she was not a bad person hence she cannot foresee this coming. I felt it was to speak the audience’s mind.😅
Uhm, I think the rain scene has some symbolic meaning about it? Though I’m not sure, does he mean to say the…
Wow, that I didn’t see. But I would feel what both said would first definitely make JXN feels more sympathy for XW and feels ZZ is too perfect for her.

I felt it’s symbolic of the two different personality between ZZ and XW. They both talked about the rain, ZZ said rain has its gentle side when it is just right; whereas XW only described the coldness of the rain. In a way, XW is pitiful as he can only see the unhappiness of the rain because he only experienced it that way.
am i the only one who felt that the scene with ZZ and JXN at the pavilion when ZZ carried the king's edict to…
I love that scene, if you noticed both ZZ and XW described the rain very differently and that reflect their personality. It is also a nice closure conversation for JXN and ZZ.

Ageed, her death was totally avoidable and so dumb. I felt the reasons that she had to die is to give them a reason to kill off Zhou YingZhi and as she also did die in the novel, hence they tried to stay true to the book.
