I haven’t figured out Chun Hee yet, but I find her iconic. She has great style and carries herself well. Her girls night outings with Eun Pyo are really cute. I must say things escalated quickly with Jin Ha. Grand opening/grand closing.😯 Eun Pyo is not an easy character to connect to. The others overshadow her. I’m more interested in the activist mom and what’s going on with her weird director husband. She’s adorable.
I’m loving it so far! One thing I notice is how values shift based on its environment and priorities. The heroes are no longer the entertainers and pro athletes but militarized deliverymen who transport basic necessities refugees depend on to survive the harsh elements. I like how this drama delves into the classicism at its most extreme. Imagine living in a nearly uninhabitable desert wasteland resembling Mars while the elite live in a fully restored, gated city with clean air, vegetation, and accessible resources. It really is an extraordinary depiction of the haves and have nots.
Well, at least with this bodyguard we don’t have to worry about him accepting random drinks from strangers while on duty and getting himself in a pickle!😅 Than is highly qualified for the job lol.
Risa’s bodyguard is Thailand’s Nikita or Lara Croft, and I’m all for it! She hasn’t said a word and I believe her. Risa is a class act. I love seeing strong, smart female characters like them.❤️
Jett is stress personified! Pheem has him shook! His meltdowns remind me of the younger half brother on Reset. It’s a lot of high pitched “Oiiiiii!,” windmilling, and throwing things. It’s alway the emotionally dysregulated siblings who want to run the family business.😫
One 20-minute episode a week is petty boots!😫 The opening on the first episode was a bit slow, but it got better on the uptake. I hope this series goes all out on celebrity culture and the entertainment industry in Japan. It’s such a rich subject matter that they can take in many directions. Japanese idol culture, industry scandals, and celebrity etiquette are epic. We’ll see if that inspires any storylines going forward. Based on this first episode, I feel like the writers may go soft on the topic. I find this series mildly enjoyable , so let’s see how next week goes! It’s too soon to enter an official rating. I’m leaning towards 7.5 thus far.
The Beatles revival sounding English music feels so out of place.😅 They should’ve used Japanese rock or Japanese style beats. The opening scene was too strong for Chelsea boots. I’m liking the story so far.
I want to hate the ending as a drama watcher, but when I look at this story realistically, it makes sense (but not the writing). That was a lot of pressure to heap up on a person with no high school diploma and a learning disability who first learned to read and write at 23 years old and excelled in the one place that would have him: the nightlife. Colonel Loud Mouth inserted himself in his daughter’s relationship (like every other area in her life) and pressured this young man who’s in EARLY adulthood when you’re free to explore and try different things.
What average 23 year old has an established career? Typically they’re only a year out of college and paying their dues at the entry level. Kaoru was never the problem in this scenario. Manami was a 35 year old woman still living at home and enmeshed with her parents. Kaoru doesn’t owe her a life. This is why she shouldn’t have dated a man in his early 20s when she’s 30s+ and looking to settle down. She’s lived her life. Let them him live his life, make his mistakes, and grow at his own place.
Kaoru’s own narcissistic mother called him stupid and harassed him for money. Anyone would’ve crashed out over failing an entrance exam and go back to what they know. Kaoru could’ve saved up his money to one day start a business, but his mother bled him dry. Now he has to provide for a woman 12 years his junior to get her father’s approval (a man whose own marriage is in shambles thanks to his abuse)? I’m Team Kaoru! He needed time to process the disappointment and find his path. Manami obviously supported him, but the age gap puts them both in different places. Kaoru was highly triggered and that exam failure basically brought up old school trauma, which we’ve watched him both avoid and endure throughout the series. He needed space to grieve alone.
This scenario shouldn’t have been stuffed into the last 15 minutes of the final episode. It should’ve happened two episodes ago, if at all (it was super unnecessary). I loved this drama, AND they botched the ending. Two things can be true!
I’m midway through episode 5 and this drama has me in tears laughing. I love all the characters and their quirks. Ung Shik dancing in the middle of the street with the tiger mascot was so unexpected and hilarious! I hope Ah Young gives him a chance. I’m definitely seeing romance and chemistry between the leads and the SML and SFL, it’s just not shoved in your face and cliche. It feels more natural thus far. I love all their interactions with each other. I appreciate how this drama shows the not so pretty side of being in a relationship and recovering from the hurt.
Ki Jun is a romantic single! I love his little getaways to various haunts, like the temple for coffee or watching the meteor shower on his jeep roof with a blanket rolled out. He’s got me thinking about some things.
Lee Da Hee never fails to play gorgeous boss babes with an exceptional wardrobe and insane confidence. She’s forever my muse.♥️
I’m giving it a try as a fan of both LDW and Lee Da Hee! I’ve avoided it because of the negative reviews, but sometimes I’m pleasantly surprised. I like life lesson dramas and prefer romance to be either nonexistent or way off to the side, developing deep in the background in a “blink and you’ll miss it” kind of way.😅 There’s a high chance I could like this drama. So far so good!
I miss dramas like these … about friendships and crime . anybody got recommendations to similar dramas?
I came here to keep that same streak going lol. Recently, I finished Behind Your Touch and The Killer’s Shopping List, which both are mystery/crime comedies. They’re hilarious with enthralling mystery and crime plots and endearing friendships/relationships.
I loved it! It’s a 10/10. The twists and turns kept me at the edge of my seat, but the hilarity had me in tears of laughter. They don’t give the plot away. You’re kept guessing until the very end. I definitely went back and forth about the suspects. However, seeing “McArthur’s” attempt on Cha made me begin to think, maybe it’s not Seon Woo and he just uses his “village idiot” persona to shield himself from suspicion. He also overdid it grieving for people, as if trying to throw them off his trail. The chemistry between the leads was excellent! My biggest question is, what happened to Justin??? He got sent off to stay with someone early on and then McArthur was trying to escape to China. My only real critique is not giving McArthur a motive for the murders he committed, excluding his wife. This felt lazy. How would someone like him become a serial killer overnight because he can see into people’s hearts and he enjoyed the power trip. That was kind of boring for a villain who wreaked havoc in a quiet town? It would’ve also been nice to show more romance at the end. There was no date, no kiss, or sweet confession. The women’s prison mission robbed that opportunity. The glowing lipstick scene was really funny though.🤣
Ye Bun’s mouth is too big!😫 Why does she keep blabbing details about the cases to people? She gives away big details thinking everyone is trustworthy. That’s the only thing that’s irritating me. She has no sense of discretion. Hopefully she never serves on a jury.😅
Lee Min Ki has been my favorite actor since way back on Dal Ja’s Spring! I had been avoiding this drama because it sounded too silly, but I was craving more comedic mysteries and I adore both leads. The good rating gave me assurance. I’m so glad I went against my bias and gave this drama a chance. I’m cackling! I love the small town coziness and hilarious interactions. I live for Jang Yeol’s expressions.
Manami’s Father needs help. Why is he pulling up to her place like a rabid Rottweiler? This woman is pushing 40!!! I can only imagine what his employees went through. Big ups to HR for standing on business about that powa-hara and firing him! Manami’s apartment is cute and suits her. I’m glad she’s finding her own way forward and going after what and who she wants.
Kaoru’s mother is truly for the streets.😫 The way she treats him like her cashcow while doting on her youngest son and burning Kaoru’s hard-earned money on her dusty husband is reprehensible. Kaoru and Manami need to move away together to another prefecture and change their numbers. Japan has airtight privacy laws, so they can easily disappear themselves and live freely.
That is the only negative I have noticed in this drama. In the initial episodes I thought Hikaru is the biggest…
Yes, Haruka’s growth arc was the missing piece! Initially she wanted to change for herself, but then her motivation became beautifying herself for dates with Kurotaki. She never dressed up during daytime for herself, only date nights. That’s when I knew the plot was getting lost. She seemed to have developed a love of makeup, but she never took initiative to learn more and develop her skills. She relied on Hikaru. Once Haruka was with Hikaru, she only joined Mio’s team because she wanted to work hard to match Hikaru’s work ethic, not because of her own interests. At the very least I hoped she would’ve found her niche and out of passion for it, find her own path. Even something as little as working at the department store makeup counter and helping customers who struggled like she once did would’ve sufficed. Then in the time-skip, maybe we see her expand into an expert. Perhaps she opened a shop and had business partnerships with Mio and Hikaru. There wasn’t any spark or motivation.
This drama is right up my alley. I love how Korea blends comedy and mystery. I’m completely invested. The slow-mo nunchucks chase scenes had me in tears.🤣 Ah Hee, Fish, and Young Choon are my favorite characters. Young Choon is really out here being the prize and looking cute while Myung Sook does all the heavy lifting.🥀 Daesung’s side quests are a hallmark to the story flow. I feel I figured out the culprit early, but they make compelling suspects out of other characters, which keeps it engaging.
I have resigned myself to accept that Haruka’s dream is to support Hikaru and be self-deprecating. That is her passion. Who am I to judge?😩 If it makes her happy to work hard to be “worthy of Hikaru,” more power to her! However, with the five-year time-skip, I would’ve hoped she found herself instead enmeshing herself with Hikaru. Where did she graduate from? What did she study? All we know is she joined Hikaru’s company.
Hikaru still feels like Haruka’s idol rather than longterm partner. Her reaction to the marriage question once again focused on making sure everything was comfortable and acceptable for Hikaru, not what she wanted. It’s been five years and she’s still tip-toeing around him? This is odd. Does she have any of her own thoughts or feelings outside Hikaru’s orbit? Not really!
I enjoyed the drama for what it was! However, I wish Haruka didn’t have such shallow character development. She has nothing of her own. Her world revolved around Hikaru from beginning to end. Mio was a side character and got solid development from a flashback in one episode.😫 Honestly, this was Hikaru’s show and it should’ve been written from his point of view. He was a strong, well-rounded character with a solid plot.
The second half has been so strong! Personally, I like the bit of tension happening between Hikaru and Haruka. It’s not the cliche kind either. They’re in a new relationship, plus they’re at the age where your life starts to “begin” and priorities conflict. This is good tension. We’re getting to see Hikaru as a flawed, complex human with feelings and insecurities, not the “chic, cool girl” Haruka first came to know him as. Honestly, this makes me like him more.
I’m glad the ex encouraged Haruka, but I also think he overstepped his boundaries as an ex by addressing Hikaru. Haruka needs to speak up for herself and stop being overly accommodating to her S/Os.
