Unless they had everything lined up and ready to go for the S2 release, they should not have done this. We have no guarantee of S2. They should have condensced the novels into one season. This ending is abrupt and unresolved with no word on a contiunuation.

Yup. I hadn't realized that the novel which the show is based on has "parts" or "volumes" or whatever you'd call it, nor that the show will likely also be split that way. The novel itself has a happy ending but only for the final ending. Volume one ends in heartbreak.
