If the real BSE told the ML that the chairman was aware of the accident and influenced HHJ's mother to have HHJ play mute it can explain why he feels so sad and guilty.
A better adjusted character would have realized that HHJ needs him for her recovery and happines. But since he's been damaged and traumatized by his own childhood, he doesn't realize this so he "falls on his sword" and leaves her.

Come and Hug me is less mystery more thriller; it's also a solid romance and very heart warming.
