He’s protecting her. His company which is older than JX’s is in direct competition with JX’s. Anyone else would have crushed her. He’s building her up with a view towards merging in the future. This path protects her dream while maintaining HT’s much older company which wasn’t going to disappear.

About HT’s answer, while it’s not what JX wanted to hear, he was being honest. In the novel he goes on to say that love to him is living each day together wanting the same things building a future etc. then he adds that he only wants that with JX. She otoh at this point bc HT kept secrets in a way that seemed to betray her, plus ZD getting into her head, what she wants is grand declarations like I’ll die for you or cant live without you. For HT both are nonsensical and not how he sees things. He will go the extra mile for her though and risk his money to protect her. The series might show all this later on but for at least the parts it already references, something got lost in translation. The novel did a much better job explaining.

which of them pushed for a relationship in the begining? i fast forwarded some of their starting secenes. but from what i recall, they were in a casual relationship with lili being very easygoing just wanting a friends-with-benefits situation but he asked her for more and she agreed. did i get that wrong?
