I guess he was not happy with the way Mrs Li convinced his mother to marry him to Shou Hua instead of Kang Ning..he felt Mrs.Li wanted both good son in laws so she schemed and married both the daughters...one was married to a scholar and other or a businessman....he has been promised Kang Ning but was married to Shou Hua so he was angry on their wedding night.
However as he didn't love Kang Ning it was just his pride that was hurt..later he came to know that the poem and the painting he had admired were infact made by Shou Hua and she was a virtuous wife who looked after his household and his mother very well..
He wanted to then share the marriage bed but Shou Hua was mad at the way he left immediately after marriage..So she was not welcoming.
Du Yang Xi has too much pride so he wanted the lady and also not apologise to her, so he wrote love poems hoping he would be forgiven but that plan didn't work.

1. Du Yang Xi is already a little jealous with the way he thinks Shou Hua is taking care of Sang Yan Rang while neglecting him, with this new person sowing seeds of suspicious, I can understand how situation may get blown up.
2. Fu Yang Xi found out that the poem and painting were of Shou Hua and not Kang Ning.
3.In this episode Fan Liang Han seems the most sensible, I am liking how he sticks up for his in laws. Liang Han doesn't believe Shou Hua would have had an affair and turned her back on that person later. Chai An and Fan Liang Han are proving to be worthy son in laws of Li family.
4. Poor Liang Han also gets caught by Fu Hui and spills all the beans...I don't think the son in laws' alliance will be able to win with Liang Han as their member🤣🤣

Shou Hua is the best wife and the housekeeper that a person could marry. Du Yang Xi saying to Sang Yan Rang with increasing degree of incredulousness...Is that my wife? Did she make this food? Did she sew your dress and shoes? 🤭🤭

I feel that many people are getting offended that it's the MLs who are saying and behaving in an unlikeable manner but they don't accept that MLs are conditioned by a different ideologies than what we have today.

May I present my opinion about what I think the series is trying to do? It's not to change your opinion but merely to put my thoughts on the table .
The scene that you are talking about where the ML casually says that the adopted daughter deserves what happened to her because she went out inviting trouble was supposed to seem out of place because the MLs in this series are many times parroting what the society's viewpoints are on a certain situation, which are totally wrong and need to be shut down (blaming the victim is what the society does best, irrespective of the time period, even in modern world, I often hear the remark that why would XYZ person do such a thing, that was like inviting trouble.)
Now this mindset of the ML in the ancient times is a reflection of what they are taught and what they observe around them and how they are conditioned to think...
The FL directly shuts down those words of the ML and says something like would you say the same thing if it would be your sister, she goes on to correct the ML, she firmly sides with the adopted daughter telling why she would want to have a better life for herself as it's her right.
So this can be seen as MLs of this series in many instances are representing the society's views on certain things which needs to be changed and the FLs are often the medium that question those and brings another perspective in front of the MLs ( aka society).
As you said the subject itself may be triggering for many viewers and it's ok if you point it out and/or stop watching the series.
nothing new here in mdl its pretty common, i encountered plenty of this type of users who would camp on the drama…

I don't mind critisism or a dessenting opinion but I have a problem with people looking down on those who are enjoying something which they deemed unfit to watch...This is moral policing and censoring at its worst...
I am going to continue watching this series..I am finding many elements to my liking as the series progresses.
I know the series is not a historical documentary but as it is loosely based on Song dynasty..I wanted to give a brief overview of role of women in that era.
During the Song Dynasty, women in China had legal rights and property, but their rights were gradually restricted by the rise of Neo-Confucianism. Women's lives were often isolated and they were expected to serve their families.
Women had more freedom and Rights in Tang Dynasty.........Confucianism brought about a lots of restrictions to women in Song and Ming dynasty.
The primary role of a woman was household management and giving birth to children... Obedience was of great essence.
This show has taken many liberties and is not an accurate portrayal but some elements of the traditions are incorporated into the story..The series is allowing the 5 Li daughters to face those restrictions to find a way to break those norms.

But I have to agree with you, that when the men try underhanded methods to one up their ladies, they are always found out by the women, they are caught and made to give an account of it.
Episode 5 I am not putting this in a spoiler tag as the issue of kidnapping has already been discussed extensively in the forum, however anyone not wanting to read it may skip the below post....
There were a few discussions regarding FuHui and Kang Ning's kidnapping..FuHui's husband LiangHan and ChaiAn went to immediate rescue of these two ladies as soon as they came to know the situation, after the ladies were rescued, they decided to wait and let the ladies stew to make them realise the consequence of disobedience.(Them waiting, was definitely a wrong choice)
However In my opinion, many people overlooked the best part of this situation.
1. The ladies who were unaware that they would be rescued, had already resourcefully freed themselves from the gag in their mouth and the ropes that had bound their hands, they did not lie in a heap of lump crying, hoping someone would rescue them...(if a person is kidnapped in real life situation, the chances of immediate rescue are less, it's better to think of an escape route yourself)
2. After the ladies had freed themselves, FuHui instructed KangNing that they should surrender all the valuables on them if the dacoits demanded them. Even their chastity was not important, what was important was the fact they should stay alive so that they could return back to their mother. (This talk was the most sensible talk I have heard in this drama, if you are caught in a dire situation, the best route in my opinion is to find a way to stay alive as long as possible.)
3. LiangHan, FuHui's husband who overheard this advise that his wife gave to her sister agreed with her and praised her for being resolute and a survivor.(LiangHan wasn't angry that FuHui did not want to give up her life if she couldn't save her virtue) LiangHan said he loved his wife and if she was sold to anyone else, he would search for her till he was able to take her home.
This theme of giving more importance to survival and preserving one's life at any cost instead of choosing death to save the ladies' virtue has been recurring. I admire this message from this drama.
I think this drama is not 'Perfect' there is room for a lot of improvement in the story's execution. Many situations could have been written differently from both the sides the MLs and the FLs...
If I continue to watch the drama through the lense of 21st Century Modern Woman, I wouldn't tolerate many scenario's..Women have different choices available today than back then...This is a 'fictional' historical family drama narrating its 'own story' of 9 women trying to break the shackles of status, matrimonial norms, gaining economic independence and making the best of their lives when their life has given them lemons.
I am interested to know how Li family and the five sisters' life change due to their encounters with people in Bianjing and how they change and influence the perspective of those people. The story of the 6th lady, the adopted daughter has also piqued my interest. I see this story being about 9 women, Mother Li, 5 daughters, the adopted daughter, two ladies maids. They are of different ages, having dissimilar dreams, divergent status, distinct struggles, having varied personalities.
None of the characters Male or Female would win an award for being 'perfect', they are flawed and many times unlikeable. I don't watch the drama for learning life lessons. Irrespective of whether I condone any characters' action, I watch it because there are many elements that I find fascinating and worthy to spend 'MY' time on.
Whenever, I watch a drama for me what matters the most is if I am willing to spend my resources of time and money (both limited) on it. I am liking the drama so far, the story is just unfolding. I want to see imperfect disagreeable fictional characters also find some comfort, support, gentleness and tolerance in their 'fictional' life.
