The conversation would be smoother if he'd used post-its from the beginning.
Now let's see him at home where his brother knows he's unable to hear as it's raining. His brother has to use a post it and he's carrying one too.
Say at the cafe mc didn't have the post it on him, he can't expect others to carry one unlike his brother.
The post it is a choice he made. He says it himself that he made the choice of using post-its because they fit his profession (and because he didn't want his soulmate to hear his voice). We don't see him using the post it during the family scene so we can't say whether he used them back then too, but I think it is, as he said, a choice he made after what happened to his parents.
