The scenes in the courtroom were a bit unrealistic, with the lawyer and prosecutor speaking out of turn - that is, not waiting for the judge to ask them to proceed. While I would assume this is your average kdrama thrillera, I'm still interested and want to unravel the mystery. The editing is well-done in the first episode. The flashbacks don't feel like flashbacks because they are incorporated well into the flow of the scene. Thank God the BGM is good too. Not loud at all, and complements the drama well. Let's see how this goes!
What reinforces your statement about it being on crack is your great explanation of how you WANT Shin Sun Rok to be innocent despite knowing the shit he did. It was his acting + the crack they fed us, I swear. I am not over the crack it fed me. The withdrawal symptoms have persisted thus far *add a devastated emoticon* My return to this page is proof enough
This is such a fun show! For one, all the cast members have great personalities that works for variety. Sooro, especially, is hilarious and extremely charming. Lucky is funny too!
Yes to the blue bird song getting stuck in people's head. It definitely won't leave mine. Loved your review! I didn't expect to find you here, although you have reviewed a few dramas I have seen before.
I have been robbed! WHY were not there more Lady Hwang and Song moments in this? Gosh damn it. I am going to sign a petition for a second season. All jokes aside, this certainly has the potential for one, if they add life to the historical figures they'll add. Besides, there are still some characters left to explore, like Lee Gyu Tae. But I am content with this too. I think the second last scene has me wishing for more, especially Park Hoon as Chang Soo.
Oh, so Jo Jung Suk is incredibly good looking with his glossy hair. I know he is a handsome dude, but seeing him unkempt made me forget he had nice hair too, lol.
Yi Kang fulfilled Jeon Bung Jon's wish of being a fertilizer to a field of mung bean flowers. It was a beautiful scene. And the flashback to Nokdu sharing that was a welcome one - it is one of my favourite scenes of this drama.
Baek Yi Hyun is a very complex character to pull off but YSH nailed it so effortlessly! He has this straight face…
Yi Hyun did admit to being jealous of the noblemen's children and lying to Yi Knag about being beat up by them just so he could have the satisfaction of seeing them in pain. I suppose he had worked to tame that side, until his almost obsessive admiration for his teacher shattered. He did not break suddenly. It was a gradual process that began with his father feeding him with the ambition of becoming a minister, being seen as low by nobles while simultaneously wanting to be them, finding that one advantage of being in a "civilized" country (that is, absence of aristocracy), admiring a teacher to the point of obsession, letting said obsession become extreme hatred and opposition to anything he himself stood for, and losing hope in himself finally.
Lady Song, a character who has stayed in the middle throughout the show, despite her personal leanings, has witnessed the major events Yi Kang and Yi Hyun could not. I am glad a woman was given such an important role in saeguk.
If Yoon Shi Yoon doesn't get an award after this I'll scream.
I will join in the angry screams. I am guessing Kim Nam Gil will get an award this year for the Fri-Sat slot though, for his performance in The Fiery Priest.
Yi Hyun losing his control when the celebrations were going on was an incredibly powerful scene. Him speaking in Japanese and wondering if he were still living in Joseon made me pity the man who used to encourage his brother to rise from his personal insecurities; the Yi Hyun I had predicted I would love.
Also, Lady Hwang grew on me throughout the drama. I did not find her interesting, and I was hardly invested in her relationship with Yi Hyun. However, her growth and new-found self-reliance has raised her importance in my eyes. You go, girl, and remind vermin that they're vermin.
