I don't think people can truly love someone without knowing his or her gender. Dam-i is aware that Ji Un is a man but Ji Un believes she is a young man. He said once it is useless to have feelings for a man, but later he acknowledged his feelings even if they are for a man.

So for me until they acknowledge each other's gender, they will not really be in love with each other for the person they are. So far, if we take things from his perspective, he is not in love with her. He had feelings for three different persons. And the last one is a young man.
