I usually hate when manly guy act cute and childish because it can come out cringe. I even expected Jin An would…
Right? There's something about this character. I think it's that fact that he's so damn *competent* at absolutely everything he does whether it be choosing fabric, shooting with a bow and arrow, military strategy, making plum buns, or mentoring her brother. He's manly because he's actually good at everything.
He's so hugely competent, and it's extremely attractive.
I just finished ep 7, does the plot get better? I haven’t really seen much development since ep 1 and am not…
If it hasn't captured you by now, then it might not be for you. I was FULLY engrossed by the end of episode 1 and now I am counting the hours until the next episode releases.
I've had similar situations, where I made it to episode 6 or 7 and just wasn't feeling it. Life is too short to watch a drama you don't enjoy! Maybe move on to something else. <3
How would you compare this to legend of the female general? Haven't started yet so interested to know - or maybe…
I really liked Legend of the Female General! It was a historical romance where the plot seemed to be secondary. The leads had excellent chemistry and though the story dragged in a few parts, the fight scenes were fun to watch. I gave it a 8.5, with some episodes 9.5 and some 7.5, but overall I liked it.
This one is also a romance, but the fantasy plot is incredibly interesting and keeps the tension high throughout. The intrigue, plotting, and pacing is overall better (so far) than LOTFG.
The female general in Shadow Love doesn't have to pretend to be incompetent or goofy, so Li Shuang is a bad ass right away, which is a lot different than LOFG where He Yan had to pretend to be less capable than she was (plus He Yan was still recovering from her injuries).
The romantic chemistry in this one is also extremely strong, I'd say it's equal so far to LOFG. The romantic chemistry in LOFG was why I kept watching it; I did feel like the direction and story were somewhat weak at times in LOFG, which wasn't the fault of the actors.
The story and setting here are more engaging and the direction is masterful (so far).
But what I like about this one so much (and what truly sets it apart) is that the character of Jin An is ADORABLE when he's not the "monster" and Chen Lei is great at comedy, which I wasn't expecting. I liked Chen Lei as Xiao Jue (the stoic general) but I love his character here more and can't wait to see what he does next.
I don't find his acting better or worse, it's just that Jin An is a more interesting character with varied behavior and emotions, but the character in LFG he was just stoic and sad all the time. I thought he did a good job with LFG, but I'm enjoying him more here. He has a great range.
Okay but WHY IS THIS SO INCREDIBLY GOOOOOD???!! Things I love so far: 1. Li Shuang is a stone-cold badass, especially when she fights. 2. Jin An is so cute, like a big puppy, but then super fierce when he transforms. 3. The story is SO GOOD 4. The side/supporting characters are all interesting. 5. I haven't fast forwarded a single scene.

Okay, but that scene where he launches her into the air and she kills that guy?
🧑🍳😙🤌
