I was a little reluctant writing this article because I was not sure if people would find it too negetive. But…
I feel your pain. That is my catharsis after a total commitment of time and energy being mindlessly toyed with by bad storylines that lure you in then trample over you with lackluster story development or acting. I write reviews and give bad ratings so I can just release the tension of frustration and my bad habit of not dropping early enough to save face.
Thank you for the article. I thought it was only me that was suffering from "groundhog day syndrome" with this drama. There is nothing new or interesting about the plot and the more I watched - which is 32 episodes so far I am asking myself -- is it something wrong with my choices after 5 years of endless repetitive storylines and plots? I have a hard time dropping any drama that I spend more than 10 hours watching so I may last until the end. I have to remember to WAIT for substantial comments and viewer ratings before diving in -- however, I was tricked by several high rated dramas as well - great beginning --- stretching boring middles and complete jump off the cliff finishes that had me pulling the last few stands of hair I am holding on to. Again thanks.
Really started as a strong and interesting drama, but failed to deliver in the end. The story line began to lose steam in the last two finishing episodes -- but overall it was worth finishing the drama and not a total waste of viewer time. The acting was strong and credible, but the script was weak.
I am actually embarassed to say I watch this daily drama. However, I realized it has everything you don't like in a drama going on and it feeds the inner need to complain and criticize. The drama drags and makes you angry, frustrated, and you literally hate half of the characters because of stupidity --- but it is this stupidity that keeps the daily morning drama "need to watch" energy flowing. After a cup of coffee and this drama - reality sets in and life isn't as bad as you thought it could be -- just fantasy drama land. On episode 100 and yes -- I can't wait to see the ending. Just hope the writer doesn't do the "repair and redemption theme on this drama". No violins are needed.
This was a 12 episode story that is stretching the viewers patience. The see saw romance and lack of real chemistry between the leads because of the nature of the story line is sad. This drama started out as a romance lovers dream and is dragging to the point of unbearable. I just wish writers were a little more creative and realize their shortcomings in substance in the story -- there is no shame in ending when an end is appropriate.
Enjoyed the beginning then story began to slow down. The version I watched needed the English translated to English because of heavy accents. Sound was not to clear but I hung on in there until the end. Wouldn't recommend - older drama with themes repeated in newer dramas. Romance was lukewarm at best.
Don't understand your comment. If you watch ep 9 carefully you will understand -- and understand the importance…
You are not rude - you were expressing your opinion which is everyone's God given right. I just spent a night crying my eyes out because this story is so pitiful and I feel for the character and the depth of I.U.'s portrayal of a "throw away" person in life. People have value and we devalue them so often in life. I wanted you to watch more and become more invested in this drama - it is worth your drama minutes.
just started watching this drama and wow, this gonna be awesome (tvn as expected never disappoints) but IU's character…
Don't understand your comment. If you watch ep 9 carefully you will understand -- and understand the importance of understanding someone that is different, has different life challenges, and obstacles that are immovable by their own efforts. Basic survival. IU is giving an Oscar winning performance for this drama. Totally moved by her acting and her imperfections as the role requires.
The director is very good. We started out with relationship building again - the strength of the brotherhood; the dreams for their mother; and the dis-functional relationship they maintain. Then he loops us into feelings of regret - why did he hire her? Why is he now alienating himself from me? Then he loops us into control -- the wife, the wife's lover, the loan shark -- then finally he takes us to the mat in emotions -- pity, tears, retribution, revenge, caring and love to the point of pain. My heart was broken last night by her story and his reaction to hearing the story. In the end -- she felt justified. Isn't that what we all want for our actions? Somebody that understands.
This is a slow and deliberate drama that evolves around how ones life can be turned upside down and inside out with circumstances beyond your control. I am thoroughly enjoying the progression of relationships and the situational conflicts and inevitable heartaches as well as fermenting romance of two older professional men both bachelors. I initially treated it as a daily drama and would watch one episode a day so I could catch up and found that the writers started to speed up the complications of relations and then I binged 15 episodes. Waiting for more. The main actor and his son 's relationship growth is priceless. The teacher love interest is a little boring - she is just annoying in my opinion - another actress might have been better cast in this role. Otherwise it is a satisfying drama but I am only on episode 32. Hopefully I am not disappointed in the ending.
I highly recommend this romantic drama -- the storyline and the acting are both credible in this innovative story and it is extremely entertaining. Watch a couple of episodes and you will immediately become hooked.
Just finished watching episode 14 - what a riveting and suspense filled drama with so many plots and subplots. With two episodes left a little worried that there may be holes left in the storyline, but I will be patient since only one week left. The acting is great and I have to give Kim Nam Joo the best-dressed actress award in any drama for the past 5 years. She is killing it with those shoes and professional styled clothes she has worn throughout. Great job -- stylist. a must watch drama
I don't understand the lower ratings. A good drama about family secrets and faith. The actors were chosen well for the characters they played and the story was complex enough for the viewer to stay engaged until the end. What is love and how can it be misinterpreted would be my take away from this drama.
The best of the best. I have bumped my rating up to 10. The music is fantastic -- every scene is complemented by a soundtrack that is apropos to the action or suspense. Highly recommend older viewers (over19) watch this drama. The cast selection and acting is riveting throughout. Can't wait until next Saturday.
Definitely worth watching. One of the best drama specials I have watched. Short but a story that has character development, logical and plausible scenes and a very good ending .. leaving all with a wish that this was a 2-hour movie instead of a drama special.
Really intense show. Very good acting. Complicated but logical storyline if you pay close attention to each episode. And I really liked the ending. One of the best revenge dramas I have watched. Jang Hyuk is one of the most talented actors I have watched. All of his work is commendable and this is no exception.
This drama puts the "R" in revenge. It is very good and the acting is - shall I say - Oscar worthy!!. Jang Hyuk is the best actor I have watched in Korean dramas and he doesn't let down one iota in this story. A must see. Only 2 more to go and I can't wait until next week.
I love the visuals for Tribes and Empires - throughout ep 66 (the farthest it has gone on DF). The plot was intricate and engaging the first 50 plus episodes. Initially, there were enough characters introduced to weave an excellent tale focusing on the three tribes and their historical relationship which created the diversity.
Then something happened that was unbelievable from my point of view. I believe the crossroads has been reached between EXCELLENT and EXCESSIVE. There are so many characters, so many factions, so many side stories, so much to interpret and this is only in the first 66 episodes. I can't imagine what kind of budget this director was working with but most assuredly he spared not a cent spending it on trivia and miscellaneous. I literally have a notebook with the list of characters and their relationship to the stories or the tribes to understand what in the heck is going on each week. It is a spider web of stories )more like bes in a hive) and contradictions when you really watch more than one episode a second time.
I am not rating this drama or writing a review until episode 75. I believe there will be more visually stunning scenes and I'm waiting for more characters to be revealed in the story.
I just wish the opening music was produced into a MV. That has been the most awesome introduction to a drama I have heard -- I need full orchestra with conductor soon. Worth listening to a great classical piece.
Very good drama - well written and enough twists and turns to engage the viewer episode to episode. I am glad this drama was highlighted with an article by MDL -- serious drama watchers should not miss this one. The acting - award winning. Love Jang Hyuk - one of the most talented actors in Korea and able to handle diverse scripts convincingly.
