Agree with you - dropped MM on ep 1. Neither lead did it for me. I came here for Landi but half expected to drop it if ARP bombed out. But instead he surprised me.

It would be very strange to see romance in this genre when cultivators are usually vegetarian and don't indulge…
No it wouldn't be and yet I still cringe every time they do it. Also the CP is a solid NO for me anyway. Idk what casting director would pair up someone with a super long neck with someone with a short one. But it still does not top the disturbing visuals of the Ever Night pairing by this same director so you could say she has improved...

Its Yang Yang with bangs.
Luckily for Yang Yang he can still pull off a teenage role with the right styling and clothes. I wouldn't be surprised either if the director asked him to lose weight for the early episodes.

i have a question for the people who watched the first eps, his acting got better in this or it is still the same?…
I found the first 2 episodes a bit slow but eps 3 and 4 were really good. I think it is distinctly different from romance xianxia that we have gotten too much of lately so if you are looking for something different, you will find it here. It is adapted from one of the most iconic and influential xianxia web novels in Chinese fantasy literature. While I didn't get around to reading it, it was a massive hit novel in the classic xianxia tradition that is praised to have defined many tropes of the "mortal cultivation" subgenre.

While I wouldn't call this a xuanhuan, technically xianxias are a subset of the broader xuanhuan or fantasy genre. But since this is clearly rooted in Chinese Daoist cultivation tradition with no Western elements so far, IMHO it is far more accurate and informative to describe it as a xianxia. Ever Night on the other hand, which is director Yang Yang's other fantasy drama is clearly a xuanhuan.

Indeed the whole idea of a cultivator with a romantic interest just sounds so not right.

Title The Immortal Ascension Spoiler
Ep 3: Seems strange that he just sticks around
I know that he wanted to find out what happened to Zhang Tai but it was kind of clear her was most likely already dead. And considering how advanced his medical knowledge became, he could have cured himself.

It does indeed look a lot like Ever Night.
Its not a comparison necessarily to refer to a director's past works. đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž People are free to comment or compare as they like in a public forum like this.

Yes, I think red would not have been fitting given what happened.

I was listening to AvenueX and she mentioned the CGI and special effects were cause for concern and unimpressive.…
The CGI and camerawork is not terrible - it just smacks of Ever Night, which was shot quite long ago now. That makes it look a bit dated. But I like Yang Yang's cinematography and the fact she shoots a lot of scenes outdoors instead of in front of a green screen. The start is not that engaging - and at ep 2 I don't feel any chemistry yet between the actors so far. But we haven't seen all of the main cast yet.

I found that funny too. I enjoyed all the little nods to Longest Day in Chang’an.
I think he also played the emperor again at the end - it looked like his shape though I couldn’t really see him.
