Zichuan Xiu is isolated - wanted by both Beizu and Zichuan as a traitor. Interestingly both Sairong and Canxing use similar tactics to isolate him. But Xiu has made a lot of progress already in uniting the different tribes of Yanzhou. Beizu's strategy with Yanzhou seems to be to loot it as a source for money and minerals for weapons to support their push towards Zichuan. They intend to enslave some of the people in the mines and kill off all the rest to avoid unnecessary rebellions. They are coming for the temple not just for the loot but also to break the spirit of the tribes. Xiu will have his hands full rallying Yanzhou to stave off Beizu with his rag tag army and limited resources. But Liu Fengshuang a talented military strategists seems to have been cut off from her family and may be on the run. Looks like she could team up with Xiu in the coming episodes.
Back in Zichuan:
Canxing the ultimate Machiavelli from S1 continues to scheme with Part 1 of his divide and conquer strategy successfully executed with the isolation of Xiu from his brothers. He is now clearly dividing Si Yilin and Di Lin. He has paired up Si Yilin with his trusted god-daughter Li Qing. He is spreading rumors to cause them to marry, sealing Si Yilin's loyalty to him. I suspect he will move against Di Lin the next time he sends Si Yilin and Li Qing off to battle somewhere. He let Di Lin's wife go just to make Di Lin let down his guard against him. She is pregnant and can't run anyway.
But Di Lin is also making his own plans. I think the only thing that keeps him in check is his wife and there is foreshadowing that her pregnancy will kill her. There was a lot of hidden talk in his conversation with Sairong. He gave up too much from Zichuan to get Si Yilin and not much of an army out of that fort. He could have probably secured their release with just Ka Dan and a smaller handful of cities. But he wants to potentially make an alliance with Sairong and so he gave him a ton of goodies. Sairong can read between the lines and has already made his first bid. It was not exactly refused. Sairong did not need to let a powerful general of Zichuan (one that even scares Yun Qianxue) leave like that if he were confident of his loyalty. The unquestioningly loyal Si Yilin for example would have never left that meeting alive. He let Di Lin go because he knows that Di Lin is more useful to him alive than dead. He knows Canxing will never tolerate Di Lin's naked ambition and that he is part of the internal strife in Zichuan. He can sweep in and cleanup later when Zichuan is weakened from within.
We are building up towards a very tricky dynamic with Si Yilin and Di Lin looking like they are going to be on opposite sides. Not sure how its going to play out.
