I would be shocked if this one gets a 7.8. Even JOL1 only got a 7.9. It is true that 7.5 is a very strong Douban rating for this genre - so far, only Immortal Ascension got a 7.5 this year. In the last 3 years, STOTD 1 and 2 have been rated 8.0 and 8.6 and The Blood of Youth got an 8.3.

I think his motives and actions would be more understandable if the narrative would have shown him dependent on the Zhuang clan; i.e., not powerful enough a ruler to protect his family from them. Its kind of hinted or implied but not strongly enough to not make him seem just bat shit crazy. But bc this is a fairly common power dynamic in Chinese history, Chinese commentators don't seem to think he is that delusional.

Not a huge fan of his acting either, dropped most of his other dramas bc his usual style is way too performative for me. But he tones it down in this drama to a much more watchable level. He is a young actor that has improved over time.
