He lost my sympathy when I saw that he was only the son of a concubine, that the crown prince had many other sons, possibly legitimate ones (from his legitimate wife). So had his father lived, he never had any real chance of succeeding. Nonetheless, he still takes precedence over the current emperor according to the laws of primogeniture.

There was never any question in my mind that Lingyun died dead. Its impossible two countries would f*ck up the identification of her corpse so badly they would be on the brink of war. That is the kind of thing that would only happen in a bad dogs blood melodrama like the most recent forgettable drama that everyone seems to have been watching.

Unpopular opinion - I don't like the screenwriter at all. She is a total idiot and an airhead - she is ok when she is adapting a good writer's work and following it 100pct - her self written plots make no sense - not just this drama but others. Her prose and dialogues are weak to barely passable - even if I evaluate it as vernacular Chinese. Director is pretty good though.

Nah, nope, this director is definitely not prudish. Anyone who says otherwise just doesn't know what they are talking about . But in the new woke world, you just can't shoot the kinds of dark love scenes she is well known for. Esp not on anything airing on TV.

ending scenes were epic. Better than TROP. This actor is going places.

Ye Li's mother married beneath her and her husband's family always resented her for it, even though they enjoyed the fact that her family's status elevated the official positions of all the Ye brothers. It was common and a sign of status for an established man to have concubines and he probably did it as a passive aggressive way to put his "uppity" wife in her place. Once Lishan academy fell, he booted his "fallen" wife and daughter out and colluded with Marquis Murong to hitch his social climbing to his wagon instead.

LYF is an incredibly sad drama about a broken gal who never really heals.

As someone mentions above, if you want to watch dramas with good kiss scenes in general, look for webdramas. Anything that goes for TV broadcast in China will be dialled down.

It all boils down to what kind of dramas you like. The Double is a high drama soap opera. Its quite addictive if you like that kind of dark revenge melodrama. If you are looking for good storytelling, you could try checking out this Director's other works. Not many of her projects have disappointed me. Her most recent work before this was Demon Hunter's Romance, which is also by the same screenwriter. If you want ideas I keep lists ranking dramas I have watched by year under my profile but you may not share my taste.

Well I don't really agree - this is not about gender. I think irrespective of gender, what she did - murder the crown prince with all his other sons in the Eastern Palace, Mo Xiuwen and his 30k army, indirectly causing Lishan academy to die of plague bc they had no meds.... these are vile and heinous crimes with high body count. I would condemn anyone man or woman who did something like this.

The rules of primogeniture are very strict and none of those are considerations.

I doubt it - the ED was genuinely surprised by the deaths. If it was man made, she didn't do it. If it were man made, my top suspect is MJL bc: 1.) we know the outbreak occurred 5 years ago and he was under house arrest by the ED for 3 years so the timing fits, 2.) he knew he lost Lishan's support after he turned around and accused the 18 Lishan students that were escorting him to safety 3.) it would explain why Ye Li was somehow spared and 4.) it would explain why Han Mingxi was lurking around the academy when Ye Li descended from the mountain.
