Nice Ted talk and good questions but I have to disagree with many points here..
1. 2 episodes for working of Xie family would be completely insufficient...the family is too complex, pretending one thing and acting another...
2. You have completely overlooked the fact that Shen Run pretended to be corrupt offical, and schemed against corrupt officials of Hengtang and eventually got all the embezzled/looted grain back to the people...the whole pretention and playing out the scheme while also uncovering the FL's revenge side of the story was artistically done.
3. We don't yet understand the revenge story of Yan Rui is becauase it is intertwined with FL's revenge story and necessary build up has to be given till it reaches this point...dumping Shen Run's back story wouldn't have the impact and connection to FL's story as needed
4. It wasn't just take down of Concubine Mei...it was a step-by-step revenge by FL...she first had to enter the household, target Nanny who is killed, make the eldest daughter’s mother confide and then trap Concubine Mei...all the time maintaining a facade of dedicated granddaughter to the Xie family...
The plot, the slow unraveling of the schemes, the games everyone is playing with one another...it is an intelligently written and excecuted plot, with dialogues with hidden meanings, complex characters and enough emotional scenes to keep genuine viewers invested. The plot, for me, is like a game of cards...some cards on table, what cards do players have? And all players (characters) are bluffing and having multiple hidden intentions.
It is asking of these questions which keeps the viewer invested in the plot as we enjoy the day's episode and answers to questions that arose in the previous episodes.

It’s actually a pretty common phenomenon! The “deer in the headlights” expression exists for a reason 😭 Freezing is a recognised response to overwhelming fear or danger. It's not aabout survival instincts, just learned coping mechanisms which can be trained out of someone.
Unfortunately this is a period drama and FL did not have psychologists 🤣🤣 you caan be saved though

The FL freezing in the face of fear isn’t some inexplicable character flaw—it’s literally a recognised trauma response: the "freeze response".
She witnessed her mother’s murder as a child and learned that staying quiet was what kept her alive. So when faced with grave physical danger, her instinct to freeze is actually consistent with her psychological history.

Nice way to experiment using AI techs..

Finally, an ML whose life isn’t entirely consumed by revenge. He knows his mission, takes it seriously, but understands that it’s a part of his life—not his whole life.

Finally, a script that lets the ML pursue revenge without making revenge his entire personality.

A drama with a limited budget and barely any promotion. This is proof enough that a strong plot can speak for itself.
You can have all the hype, promotion and familiar tropes in the world, but a genuinely compelling story will always find an audience.

The drama has already crossed the halfway mark, and yet some people who clearly aren’t enjoying it seem determined to stick around just to rain on everyone else’s parade. Dropping it is apparently not an option.

And the moment someone points this out, out come the “it’s an open website” and “stop policing comments” arguments.

Start the fire, then cry victim when someone calls them out for starting it.

Take a hint: if it’s not your cup of tea, leave it be. Don’t spoil the whole pot for the people actually enjoying it.

The interesting thing is, even when we can guess who the villains are and know the real identities of ML amd FL, the drama still manages to keep us guessing. It’s not just about finding out who did what—it’s about watching the revenge unfold step by step and seeing how all the pieces come together. That’s what keeping us invested even after the identity of villian if pretty much known by now, and that’s what makes this drama excellent.

I felt the same in Moonlit Reunion...almost like they use his popularity to promote other actors..

Yes, this drama has it all—humour, funny moments, intensity, suspense, romance, revenge, and plenty of plot twists.
A complete package.

1. The eldest daughter’s mother speaking up at that time seems somewhat suspicious.
2. There also seems to be some sort of hidden interaction between the senior ladies before Concubine Mei gives in.

The plaque over the Xie Clan ancestral hall says “Harmony among Kin.”
The irony wasn’t lost on me. 😂

It really seems like that...but you never know with C-dramas. 😂 The plot can flip so hard, it gives you whiplash. I’m not ruling anything out yet.

Those lines, said by Xu Kai in his own voice with that intense gaze, had me swooning😍🥰❤️

But beyond the swoon, I love that scriptwriters don't make Yan Rui try to take over FL’s journey or make her weak and dependent on him. Yes, he is more powerful, but he respects her choices and simply lets her know that he’ll have her back. Their trust, the gradual building of their relationship, and the way they pursue their own revenge while supporting each other is such a delight to watch.

1. So Concubine Mei is tricked into confessing. She admits she gave abortion pills to the 5th concubine but never intended for her to die. She also accused FL’s mother of murder and drew her out of the house, but insists she never killed her.
2. FL tells she is sure it was Concubine Mei, and we’re shown a flashback of a lady getting out of a sedan with that distinctive hairpin.
3. Everyone seems to feel the matter is settled.

I think FL is only pretending that the matter is settled so she can investigate further in secret and give the real culprits a false sense of security. The real culprits may either be drawn into that false sense of security or simply bide their time until they can do away with FL too.

4. And the father...today’s episode has me wondering—is he genuinely regretful and secretly helping with the investigation, or is he actually a master manipulator? I’m leaning towards him being a villain, but I’m still not ready to put him firmly in either category. Only further episodes will tell.
