What I was partly trying to get at I guess is that I think BOC is good at writing original plot and concept but not so good at writing original characters. Kinnporsche’s strength is definetly it’s characters and their dynamics, and the amount of fic that exists is a testament of how beloved the characters are by fans (even Kimchay, who had like 10 minutes of screentime have like over 5000 fics
on ao3😃)

While newer BOC productions are consistently good in cinematography and acting and the plot is iunique, the problem is that there has been a shift from character-focus to actor focus. Just to make a comparison, out of the limited amount of 4 minutes fics out there the overwhelming majority of fics are JessBible rpf , which shows that people just did not resonate with Thyme Great on a deeper level.

One thing I think really impedes on the creation of compelling original characters is how characters are tailored for the actors signed under the label (they are essentially idols) It makes people see the actor first and the character is just an afterthought. When I was watching KP I felt like I was watching Kinn and Porsche, Vegas and Pete and Kim and Chay, but in the new shows I feel like I’m just watching the actors. I wish scriptwriters would write characters first and cast later through auditions ( I know this is not the preferred method in Thailand)

Also just to be clear I do want them (BOC) to be ambitious, it’s just that I wish they would put some of that ambition to create something big and character-focused like KP (rather than distancing themselves from BL, I want creators to improve it: the problem is not BL but bad BL) KP felt like it was made unapologetically for fans with love with the kind of ambition and budget that was unheard of for a BL at the time. It was not trying to impress critics , so it did not have to play it safe. I remember watching it for the first time and thinking ”damn, they actually did this”. Whenever there is a desire to appeal to general audiences, there are kind of some unspoken rules regarding what can and cannot be shown.

I’m all for Apo or anyone else embarking on new career paths and leaving BOC if that’s what they want. I’m not that fond of celebrities in the first place and actually prefer the formula of new character=new face. I know a lot of people are here for the actors, but what I crave for is high emotional intensity and stakes + characters that make me think about them 3 years after the show ended😆

One reason I might be not that receptive towards productions such as the upcoming Shine is the focus on social issues , which I prefer to rather engage with through the medium of documentaries. there is of course also the fact that queer issues are already such an integral part of my everyday life that I would rather at least in fiction escape from content where the main conflict arises from society being homopohobic. Of course I can sometimes enjoy a social issue-focused drama, but maybe only once every two yearsXD

I do feel a bit sorry for the KP cast sometimes as the show’s iconicness might have turned out to be both a blessing and a curse for them lol

I’m not sure if this is the place to say this but I’m gonna do it anyway. Am I the only one who feels like BOC post-Kinnporsche seems to be chasing prestige over passion? They are trying real hard to transcend BL and show they are more than that, but fact remains their only massive global hit was Kinnporsche, a BL that took the genre seriously. One reason Kinnporsche is so beloved by fans to this day is that it never apologized for what it was but instead embraced and refined every trope and character in a way that elevated the story and romance to the next level. I want to like the newer BOC productions so bad, but the emotional hook is just not there built in the characters and their dynamics. While the novels for KP were deeply flawed, they kind of gave BOC a map of what fans care about. What I’m trying to say with this little rant is that rather than trying to escape the Bl label, BOC should at least occasionally return to their roots and try to evolve BL like Kp did and show what it can be at its best. The current state and direction of dramas has just been so frustrating for me😩like the only thing I’m looking somewhat forward to is the upcoming GL Clairebell.

There is apparently a third one coming too with one of the newbies from Be On Cloud. Now is the era of vampires it seems😁

2-3 is very valid. Unfortunately I don’t currently see the appeal of GMMTV shows either, so there is no hope for me there either.They are too formulaic for me and that company is too preoccupied with promoting their commercialized actor ships to create anything truly good

It is always quite sus whenever the review section has an abundance of 10s and/or 1s. Btw some of the all 10 reviews for NP were obviously AI generated lol My personal rating (which I have not given yet) would currently be 5. It’s sad cause it was closer to 8 during the first few episodes.

If they will not make this gay I hope they at least tone down on the homoeroticism and make it seem like an actual straight male friendship and not like two people in love. I’m all for friendships but it annoys me if two characters have romantic chemistry and then they are made to be just friends. I want gay romance or genuine friendship, no weird queerbaity thing in between. Like if this is not gay then they better not make the leads stare longingly into each other’s eyes or make them ready to sacrifice everything for each other lol

Domundi’s new lineup was a turn off for me from the start. Too many shows with some sort of show biz setting and the fantasy ones looked too childish for me😕

I think it would be really difficult for someone who is not a stan of any of the actors to enjoy this.A lot of BLs are like this though, so it’s not anything new I guess.

I was originally considering watching Khemjira next but after my disappointment with this one I might have to stay away from Domundi shows just like GMMTV ones😩NP at this point feels like an inexperienced teenager was given a big budget and free reign to do what they want with it.

Yeah overall everything in Emmaly looks really artificial and the worldbuilding is some of the worst I’ve seen

This might be a small thing, but the marketplaces in this show really bother me. They are way too clean, organized and look like filming sets.Not at all lively and messy in the way that marketplaces usually are. In short, the common people spaces lack an organic vibe.

I hate this practise so much ugh. After the 2nd show or so I cannot see characters anymore, everything just feels like a rpf AU.

So this is now a BL with a new cast? (Mike is promoting the show alone at a BL event-the same one Be On Cloud promotes Shine at) It’s starting to look like no one took up the project so he changed it and is still looking for sponsors. I hope they release a new pilot to avoid confusion as so far he just keeps showing the old pilot despite cast changes (maybe he has not found new actors yet)At this point I’m 90% sure Becky and Jeff are no longer part of the project cause they are not promoting Vamp at all, not even reposting on social media.

I agree that many Thai shows are quite poorly written in comparison to for example Chinese shows. It is important to remember though that there is no single correct way a gay man or any queer person would behave in a certain situation. Different gay people behave in different ways in the same situation as the LGBT community is not a monolith . This next part is a bit off tangent, but just like straight people projecting their own fantasies on queer stories, I’m also a bit iffy about how feminine characters in BLs get a lot of hate from fans and get called ”heteronormative”. There are a lot of femme gays out there, so it’s weird that they are rejected by so many in BLs.
