It is my impression that Asian writers seem to have a very deterministic way about how they write. They write to suit genre most of the time while disregarding the natural development of the story they've created. So if you're writing a romance it HAS to be tragic! Someone has to contract a deadly illness or die or separate. Or there absolutely must be a love triangle. That's why the same cliches are constantly repeating themselves whether you're watching a show from Japan, Taiwan or Korea.

The concept of internally driven conflict - conflict born within a relationship itself, between the couple, doesn't seem to carry much weight. A waste, imo, because it's hard enough for 2 people to try & co-exist together. It's hard enough for hearing people to communicate, much less someone who is totally mute & his young partner who tries her best, but loses her patience with him in the best of situations.

So to me the male lead's disability in Aishiteiru WAS the most effective conflict to drive the story. It sets an incredible foundation for dramatic believability. The show did make good use of it to an extent, but then they brought in all those other stuff & I have no clue why. Again I think it's mostly because they write to suit genre, not story.

You should watch it for yourself and see. It'd be interesting to hear your take on it. It's available on all the popular streaming sites & I think it's on asiatorrents too if you prefer to download.

I like to analyze things too. As a creative it's not possible to watch a show or movie 100% entirely for entertainment only. I take cues from literally EVERYTHING I watch & analyze it to see how I can adapt the parts I really liked & make it my own, with my own signature. Good dramaturgy - a cohesive, natural flow of action - is something I'm always on the lookout for ... since it's so rare (but interestingly more common in Asian cinema than Western!).

That said, when a show, and in particular romantic ones, is so entertaining that I get totally caught up, I can't keep my subjectivity out of it.

It's been a few days now since I watched Aishiteru to Ikketure & I think about it a lot. I do because it gave me, for the most part, such incredibly warm feelings & I really liked the characters a great deal. The initial shock of the disappointing ending has worn off, but even now in a more objective state of mind I still think those last 4 episodes were botched.

And I'll tell you why. It's because the last ditch conflict that was introduced felt fake & blown out of proportion. Conflict for the sake of having conflict, not conflict born organically out of the circumstances built around the characters in the previous 8 eps.

I experienced this in Cruel City as well when characters I knew to be one way started acting in a way that was completely out of character, for what appeared to be no other reason than that the writers felt this change was necessary for the genre.

I too have decided to pass on Who Are You? Everyone I've spoken to said it's a disappointment. That's too bad because I wanted to see that guy from Coffee Prince again.

Since it's hard for me to drop a drama once I start I don't want to risk starting a boring drama and then having to force my way thru it. So I'd rather pass on it all together.

Can You Hear My Heart hasn't won me over yet. For some reason the characters are really annoying me when I should be loving them. I think it's the acting that I find unconvincing & the cast. I don't find the leads particularly attractive. But we'll see how it goes. Maybe they'll grow on me as the show progresses...

Any good plans for the weekend?
Have a good one, my friend! :)

Oh it's him! I have actually not watched a single drama with him. :)

Dog & Wolf and 2 Weeks are on the list to watch, and I'm looking forward to both. I didn't know he was this fine! Wow!

Dog & Wolf has been on my priority list for a while now so it'll be my next drama after City Hall which I plan to watch as soon as I wrap up Can You Hear My Heart & Golden Empire.

Tell me about these bloody pics on MDL! I don't know where people find them! I've come up on so many unflattering photos of otherwise gorgeous actors that I've been meaning to post a comment about it. Being the shallow wretch that I am I often pass on dramas or down prioritize them because the eye candy was up to par. But then I'd lecture myself about being a drama addict of no substance & watch the show, only to discover the actor is way hotter than I expected. Case in point Queen In-Hyun's Man, Lovers, Que Sera Sera etc. Can you actually believe I thought Eric Munn was unattractive??? My days ...

Hopefully now I've learned my lesson! haha
What are you watching now? Anything good? I didn't realize you had finished Lovers! I thought you still had it on hold. I see you gave it a 6, guess it wasn't your cup of tea, huh? Oh well, you at least gotta admit Lee Seo-jin is one hot #¤%/&")=! I'm hooked on that man for life! :p

Awesome! Your feelings about Cruel City are pretty much the same as mine although I gave it a 7 for a generally uninspiring script.

I'm talking about this Lovers:

Que Sera Sera is well worth the watch. That drama offered up some great life lessons that I think everyone can get something out of. Leading up to ep 10 the romance is pretty intense with a lot of twists & turns. The kisses too are some of the best I've seen in dramaland.

Are you into Japanese dramas? I know of some pretty good ones if you'd like some recs. Let me know. :-)

What do you plan to watch next? I'm currently watching Can You Hear My Heart ... though I'm on ep 8 I can not say yet for sure that I'm liking this drama. For some reason the cast isn't quite working for me. They annoy me when I should be rooting for them. But everyone says it's a pretty good drama so I'm going to stick it out & see if my feelings change.

I'm also planning to start Golden Empire sometime this weekend.

Coffee, dear, Padam Padam is indeed wonderful. It's one of Jung Woo-sung's soundest roles. I loved him in this! And while it broke my heart I couldn't imagine a more worthy introduction to the world of Korean dramas. The show has a solid script, stellar acting and above average production standards. I sincerely hope it will be to your liking, if not become one of your favourites! :)

Never heard of Remote, but I'll be sure to avoid it.

If I had to choose the lesser of 2 evils - the aegyo idiot or the super bitch, I'd choose the former. Bitchy heroines piss me off. I don't want to see them in my entertainment. I hate really jerk male leads too, but I've only met a few that were irredeemable while I have met far too many female leads who grate on my last nerve.

I am more tolerant of pretty much any type of ending in a movie. Movies are shorter & require less emotional investment. With dramas you spend hours of your life getting to know the characters. For me they become almost like friends. When things go south for them it upsets my enjoyment of the show, esp if it's a romance we're talking about. I know that's totally irrational, but it is what it is! :) I would never & could never watch 1 Litre of Tears! I don't care how life affirming it is. The worst thing I know is watching another human being suffer until they're dead! ::shudder::

There's just no way IHYV could have anything on OD so you made the right choice! :) Sæ is wonderful. She's sassy & spunky, but at the same time sweet & vulnerable. She found the perfect guy in Kai!

QIHM ... oh my god! Don't even get me started on that drama! Where that show is concerned, hype led me astray. So it ended up on my dropped list. #smdh

As for scripts ... yes, I write some from time to time! :) Mostly about topics that interest me. I wrote & directed a short back in 2011, but have produced many short films before & since. Producing is what I do on a daily basis, but I also want to write (more) & direct. My most recent script is about a female pedophile who was recently released from prison & is now trying to reconnect with her family. If I get my way it'll be a film next spring, but who knows ...
