I've watched around the same amount and while I've seen a lot of dramas in which the characters sleep in the proper attire, I've seen enough where they go to bed fully clothed in street clothes & winter jackets to comment on it. If they were in a situation where this was necessary, that would be one thing, but often they're in their own homes where you'd assume it's warm enough to at least take off your jacket. The past 2 mths I've had a chance to watch a lot of dramas because of an extended summer break & in at least half of those dramas the characters sleep in varying amounts of inappropriate attire ... from dresses, jackets, suits, to shoes, watches, chains and so on. When it comes to them wearing a bra ... such things I can suspend belief on, but I can't suspend belief on things that are blatantly illogical. When they go to bed fully made up and dressed in the clothes they've been wearing and sweating in all day, that makes NO sense at all.
OMG, yesssss! I just watched a drama where the male lead suffered a very traumatic hemorrhagic stroke and was…
I'm aware of how film productions work, given that I work in the industry. The need to enhance certain aspects of the production for dramatic effect does not give way to logic defying situations, behaviours or actions. Doing things for dramatic effect still has to stay within the scoop of reality. Violently shaking someone who has recently suffered bleeding in the brain and is in a coma as result of said injury isn't 'dramatic', it's overacting and it looks dumb as F. It looks dumb and it is dumb, and if you're not as dumb as the action itself, it totally takes away from the enjoyment of the show because you're too distracted by the absurdity of what you're seeing.
It's a mystery. You're the detective. You gotta figure sh-- out for yourself cuz the killer isn't just gonna hand…
Get outta your feelings. I said what I said & it ain't gonna change. Moreover, did I say anything about anyone's taste? Did I say people were 'abnormal' for not liking the film? I swear to god this site is overrun by idiots with a severe lack of reading comprehension skills! I'm so sick of people like you responding to my comments with nothing but nonsense. Really I am. I never said anything about people being abnormal for not liking it, but only a damn hit dog hollers! I said if you're a casual moviegoer who just wants to be entertained and not have think too much, then this isn't the movie for you. And it isn't. This is a movie for film lovers who can appreciate film as an art form and or someone who likes to unravel puzzles ... in other words, NOT your average 'casual' viewer. Learn to fkn read!
That's an exception though ... pretty much every drama I watch (esp Kdrama) one or both of the leads go to bed FULLY dressed and in full make-up even when they are alone!!! I just finished watching a drama in which the ML slept fully clothed in a 3 piece suit!!! The only things he took off were his suit jacket, his tie and his shoes. Heck, in one scene, he even went to bed IN his shoes! Generally speaking, though, he habitually slept in dress pants, dress shirt and a vest! And I'm like ... dude, who tf goes to bed like THAT????
Oh, I thought of one! Frantically shaking a person who just got into a car crash and probably has broken bones.…
OMG, yesssss! I just watched a drama where the male lead suffered a very traumatic hemorrhagic stroke and was in a coma. The FL is bawling over him and shaking the hell out of him, demanding that he wake up and I'm like WTactualF!!! You're going to kill the guy! STOP shaking him like that! Smdh Sometimes I have to wonder if script supervisers aren't a thing in dramaland.
I honestly feel like I'm the kid at the party where everyone but me is having fun and I just wanna go home lol.…
I don't know how long you've been on this site, but just want to share a little tip with you. Having been on MDL for over 7 years, one thing I've learnt is to take the general ratings and hype on this site with a HUGE grain of salt. MDL's core audience is young (early teens to early 20s) & Asian, many of whom live in Asia (esp South East Asia it would seem). In general, due to vast differences in culture & values, Asians & Westerners have completely opposite worldviews & as a result, tend to enjoy all the opposite things in drama, I have found. A lot of times what most Asian viewers might find engaging & well written, you might find slow, boring & cliche ridden as hell (I know I've found myself in that boat many times).
So if you're a western viewer (you might be Asian for all I know ...), but if you're a western viewer, it's very important to have acute awareness of your taste, esp your no go's & deal breakers, then look for viewers who share some parity with what you like & chose your shows based on their ratings rather than the MDL rating. I have a handful of MDL'ers whose list I check regularly. Generally, if a viewer shows a tendency to rate dramas similarly to me or I read comments they leave on drama pages and I can mostly relate to their viewpoints, I will bookmark them as a go to source when I want inspiration on what to watch. Sometimes there are misfires (because no two person are ever exactly alike), but mostly I've had good luck choosing dramas in this way.
Wait, WHAT?!? They sleep together??? Brother & sister ...? You're gonna have to explain that one. What do you…
I guess it depends on the culture one is brought up in. Maybe its weird in your culture? In my culture, however, (American-Caribbean) it's totally fine to cuddle and or sleep in the same bed with family members in a totally non-sexual way. Not saying it happens ALL the time, but when I was a kid it did happen on occasion. And like I said none of my family members behaved inappropriately. As far as I know none of my friends' family members behaved inappropriately either. As far as I know ...
And yes, I know about those weirdos with their yellow fever fetish. I guess if one of *those* sleazy geezers were to sleep in a bed with a teenager I'd be hella worried. In general, I would find it weird if a young girl was sleeping in a bed with someone she's not related to. I would react to that & perhaps even say something about it. If it's a relative, though, I wouldn't automatically think anything of it.
I experience culture shock every day on MDL. I've been on here since 2012 & there's a lot of craziness on here. Otaku fangirls & boys who don't have a life outside of drama. And who go off on you for the weirdest things! Smh
Wait, WHAT?!? They sleep together??? Brother & sister ...? You're gonna have to explain that one. What do you…
Would it be okay for a 17 yr old to cuddle their father or sibling? Again, I believe yes ... but it all depends on the context and the nature of the cuddling, whether it's sexual or non-sexual. Of course, everything of a sexual nature is entirely out of order.
I do agree that family members with pedophilic and or sexual deviant tendencies can take advantage of a situation like this, but I wouldn't go as far as to say ... that ALL instances of father/daughter cuddling or siblings sleeping in the same bed are inappropriate by default. No, I wouldn't say that. Because I've seen countless situations in which teenagers (myself included when I was that age) sleep and or cuddle with their family members and it was totally and completely innocent.
Instead of using a broad brush to condemn all such interactions, I'd have to evaluate each situation case by case.
Btw, if I'm understanding you correctly, your stance is that manga & anime promote sexual deviancy & that such misconduct is prevalent in Asia so koreaboos & weaboos who consume this content will start to engage in these behaviours? Am I getting that right? People can be influenced by content that they consume, yes. But I still hesitate to say EVERYone will engage in deviant behaviour. I think some will, whilst others won't.
As for Netflix, you're right. What I love about it is that its providing viewers with more diverse content from around the world. We're not bombarded with only American shows anymore. Now you can watch shows basically from anywhere, be exposed to new cultures and stories told from a fresh angle. As a lover of cinema, this is great for me because I haven't been THAT interested in watching American TV or Hollywood movies since like 2011/2012.
I went to Korea (and other parts of Asia) & started learning Korean because of my foray into Asian entertainment. I am by no means a koreaboo or weaboo of any kind, however. lol Way too grown for that. Plus I'm not into kpop (which seems to be where most boos congregate). I tend to like all the older ahjussis (you can see some on my profile!) who the koreaboos & weaboos turn their nose up at.
Wait, WHAT?!? They sleep together??? Brother & sister ...? You're gonna have to explain that one. What do you…
I don't necessarily see a problem with brother and sister sleeping in the same bed, as long as its strictly non-sexual in nature. I wouldn't categorize that as incest. Incest requires some sort of sexual interaction between blood siblings. If there aren't any, then its not incest. I guess you can also have incestuous feelings ... but still, without physical intimacy, it is by definition not incest.
I have an older brother, he's 10 years older than me. When I was a teenager and he a young adult it was not unheard of for us to lie on the same bed & play video games and such. Sometimes we fell asleep in the same bed. My brother was never & has never been inappropriate with me.
As for consensual incest, I can see your point. I too am not 'against' it in the sense that as long as they're consenting adults, then its really none of my business. But I certainly do not approve of it. It's not something I look positively upon. Those people would not be getting any congratulations or well wishes from me anytime soon, for instance.
As for Netflix, even though a show is aired on Netflix it is still generally geared toward the local market of the country where the drama is made. Netflix buys & distributes the content, but they're not too heavily involved in the creative process. For budgetary purposes they may require the episodes to be in the seasonal American format, and that run times be generally shorter, but other than that ... Netflix shows all cater to their respective local markets. And since its a subscription service (as opposed to broadcast TV), the content can be more diverse in terms of themes, sex, violence and so on.
Just a heads up for any of you trying this show:-The sex scenes are graphic. -Characters action, at times, can…
I agree that lack of communication was an issue, as it is in many Jdramas of this nature. I think this is a very culture specific issue, and quite true to life for the Japanese. The Japanese are notorious for being conflict avoidant and leaving a lot of things unsaid, to the detriment of all parties involved. It's just the way they communicate. Overall, this is a Japanese love story, so the character and plot developments cater to a local audience, not an international one (even though it's a Netflix series). If one watches the drama with that in mind, perhaps some things might be a little less bothersome ...
As for the part about kids, after Kumi went to the doctor, she found out that everything was okay with her. She's able to conceive. The doctor wanted to check Ken to make sure his swimmers weren't shooting blanks. I can't remember us finding out if he went or not & what was the result. However, after they had that conversation, the drama skipped a couple years & we see Ken & Kumi talking about her going into early menopause. She talks about no longer having a desire to have kids (but I personally don't believe her). Both she and Ken have always wanted kids. Read my comments a little further down page. I talk a bit more in detail about this issue.
Just a heads up for any of you trying this show:-The sex scenes are graphic. -Characters action, at times, can…
As for him being upset about her cheating ... why does that surprise you? No one likes to be cheated on, not even cheaters themselves. I personally would have been more surprised if he wasn't upset. Plus, while I absolutely do NOT condone cheating at all, it's difficult for me to be mad at him here. I mean, he's a young man in his prime who can't have sex with his wife. What is he supposed to do, stay celibate the rest of his life? Is that realistic? Sure, he should have straight up talked to her about his needs & 'get her blessing' to sleep with other women, but technically he did not hide his stepping out from her. He left out those brothel cards for her to find so basically she knew all along. If she was bothered by it, she should have confronted him ... not go out and sleep around with other men. But as you said, proper communication was not this couple's strong suit.
She slept with all those sleazy ass men just to take revenge on Kenichi. She certainly wasn't enjoying those sexual encounters. She wants to have sex with Ken because he's her husband and she loves him, but in general Kumiko doesn't particularly enjoy sex. She's always associated it with something dirty because of how she saw sex depicted when she was growing up. So basically she had sex with those guys just to get back at Ken for cheating on her (and I guess because she feels rejected by him). Does 2 wrongs make a right? Not in my book.
Just a heads up for any of you trying this show:-The sex scenes are graphic. -Characters action, at times, can…
When & where did Kumiko get raped? By whom?
Plus Kenichi wasn't so much upset about the cheating (I don't even think he knew about all those random guys she slept with because she actually never told him ... she only confessed the truth about her lack of virginity when they got together). Anyway, he was upset because she lied to him by omission & led him to believe for years that she was a virgin when they first met. If someone led you to believe something that they knew wasn't true ... for YEARS ... they've basically been making a fool of you the whole time, intentionally or not. Naturally, most people would find that irksome.
My interpretation of his reaction was that that was what upset him the most. He said as much when they reconciled at their old dorm. He said she misjudged him when she thought he would have been upset had she told him the truth, and that he wouldn't have cared either way that she wasn't a virgin. Furthermore, he had also long felt inadequate because he couldn't please his wife sexually, even though the situation was Kumiko's issue, not his. In general, this is a tough situation for any man to be in & most would feel some type of way about it. It must have been an extra blow to his ego to hear that her body allows her to have sex with other men, but not him. All of this understandably made him mad.
They sleep together!!!Thats not ok In real life he ll go to jail cause she is minorIf they are +18 thats really…
Wait, WHAT?!? They sleep together??? Brother & sister ...? You're gonna have to explain that one. What do you mean? As in, have sex .... or just sleep in the same bed? Maybe they are not related by blood? And ... you're okay with incest? :O
I can sub this if no one has taken up the project. But it will be a slow subbing. If anyone need to help, we may…
A very kind gesture for you to offer the sub this drama, but if you're too busy, it's probably best to leave it alone. At least until you have more time to fully dedicate to it. So many subbers start subbing a drama then stop half way and I don't think it's fair to the people who wait patiently for each ep to be subbed. Better to leave it raw than half-subbed, imo.
After watching ep 12... For the first time i felt sad for jieun's husband.... Though he was cold to her but he…
Relationships are complicated, human beings are imperfect and there might be a myriad of other factors that can make an affair seem like a viable option and or cause the person to feel stuck in a marriage, unable to leave. At the end of the day, however, affairs usually happen for purely selfish reasons, because the people who engage in them want them to happen. Plain & simple. Except in cases of abandonment or severe abuse, there's no sugarcoating or making excuses. It is what it is, a selfish act. The spouse who is being cheated on may very well be lacking as a partner, but rarely have I left an affair drama/movie feeling like "yes, cheating on your spouse was/is the right thing to do!" No, never felt like that. The cheaters always have other options besides cheating, but they cheat because they want to & because they can.
Moments before her admitting to the affair, he was a complete jerk to her about her coming home late. He was always…
I see. I haven't seen the drama yet, still evaluating if I should. I have to thread carefully when it comes to affair dramas because the vast majority of them tend to piss me all the way off. I've probably seen only 1 or 2 movies (all the affair dramas I've seen sucked!) where the topic is handled properly and where the offending party shows the appropriate remorse. Otherwise, most affair dramas & movies I've watched are a dumpster fire of a$$holery on the part of the offender.
Except for cases of abandonment or severe abuse, I don't think affairs are ever okay, no matter how dire the situation gets. Most of these couples end up divorcing anyway .... so I've never understood why divorce was never an option before someone chooses to cheat, esp when they knew all along that they were unhappy in the marriage. I feel if this woman felt mistreated by her husband, she should have clearly and straightforwardly informed him about his behaviour & how it was affecting her or leave.
One thing I've noticed in the countless affair shows I've watched is the severe lack of communication between the parties. They never communicate their needs, then they use their partner's ignorance about their unhappiness to step outside. Maybe it's because I'm such a straight shooter personally, esp when it comes to relationships, but I just hate when lack of communication is used as a catalyst for an affair, even though I know it (the lack of communication) is probably very true to life. I hate it because it is such a poor excuse to cheat.
I am aware romantic relationships are complicated, and that there might be a myriad of factors that can make an affair seem like a viable option and or cause the person to feel stuck in the marriage, unable to leave. At the end of the day, though, affairs usually happen for purely selfish reasons, because the people who engage in them want them to happen. Plain & simple. Me: Says you watch and judge for yourself and no tags!!!! :) TBH who ever wrote cry baby female lead....must have…
The genre & tagging system on this site is ridiculous. I try to get erroneous tags and genres fixed all the time but the approval admins just ignore my edits. Since I actively work in the film industry, I feel I'm more qualified than most to suggest edits, but I guess they don't care about the quality of the information in the database.
I just got done watching a predominately comedy drama & the genres were listed as: Friendship, Thriller, Business, Comedy, Romance, Youth
First of all, Friendship, Youth & Business are not genres. Those would be more appropriate as tags. Moreover, the drama was actually NOT about any of these things. The right genres were Comedy, Romance and that's it.
The actual tags that are listed on the drama reveal far too much about the characters & the plot, so basically spoilers. Sometimes I don't even bother to read the tags because I don't want to be spoiled.
The past 2 mths I've had a chance to watch a lot of dramas because of an extended summer break & in at least half of those dramas the characters sleep in varying amounts of inappropriate attire ... from dresses, jackets, suits, to shoes, watches, chains and so on.
